Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet 5940, 5940xi, and 5943 Photo Printers

Blinking lights
The lights on the front of the HP product can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. The lights indicate product status and are useful for diagnosing printing problems.

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
Issue: The Power light blinks
In this normal condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Power light: Blinking
  • Print Cartridge status lights: Off
  • PictBridge lights: Off
  • Resume light: Off

  • Cause
    The product is preparing to print. The Power light blinks while the product receives the data.
Issue: The Resume light blinks
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Power light: On
  • Print Cartridge status lights: Off
  • PictBridge lights: Off
  • Resume light: Blinking

  • Cause
    The product is out of paper, or paper is jammed in the product.
How do I resolve this issue? The following sections describe the most common messages that might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Resume light. To resolve the issue, find the message that displays on your computer (from the following choices), and then expand that section for solutions.
Issue: The Power light and the Resume light blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Power light: Blinking
  • Print Cartridge status lights: Off
  • PictBridge lights: Off
  • Resume light: Blinking
 note:
A 'Carriage is stalled' message might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Power light and Resume light.

  • Cause
    The carriage is jammed or stalled.
Issue: The Power light, the Resume light, and the Print Cartridge status lights blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Power light: Blinking
  • Print Cartridge status lights: Blinking
  • PictBridge lights: Off
  • Resume light: Blinking

  • Cause
    The product is in an error state and needs to be restarted or reset.
Issue: One or both of the Print Cartridge status lights are on
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Power light: On
  • Print Cartridge status lights: On
  • PictBridge lights: Off
  • Resume light: Off

  • The left Print Cartridge status light represents the left (tri-color) cartridge.
  • The right Print Cartridge status light represents the right (black or photo) cartridge.
  • Cause
    One or both of the cartridges might be low on ink.
Issue: One or both of the Print Cartridge status lights blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Power light: On
  • Print Cartridge status lights: Blinking
  • PictBridge lights: Off
  • Resume light: Off
 note:
A 'Print cartridge problem' or an 'Incorrect Print Cartridge(s)' message might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Print Cartridge status light.

  • If the right Print Cartridge status light blinks, then the right (black) cartridge is the problem cartridge.
  • If the left Print Cartridge status light blinks, then the left (tri-color) cartridge is the problem cartridge.
  • If both Print Cartridge status lights blink, then both cartridges need attention.
  • Cause
    One or more of the cartridges might be incompatible with the product, or the cartridges need to be reseated, cleaned, or replaced.
Issue: The Resume light and the Print Cartridge status lights blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
  • Power light: On
  • Print Cartridge status lights: Blinking
  • PictBridge lights: Off
  • Resume light: Blinking

  • Cause
    The paper size or paper type selected in the product software does not match the paper loaded in the tray.
Issue: The PictBridge Connection light and the Error light blink
In this error condition, the PictBridge Connection light and the Error light blink.
 note:
The PictBridge Connection light is green, and the Error light is red.

  • Cause
    The product has lost connection with the camera during printing.
Issue: The PictBridge Connection light is on and the Error light blinks
In this error condition, the PictBridge Connection light is on and the Error light blinks.
 note:
The PictBridge Connection light is green, and the Error light is red.

  • Cause
    The camera has lost power.
Issue: The PictBridge Connection light is on and the Error light blinks twice
In this error condition, the PictBridge Connection light is on and the Error light blinks twice.
 note:
The PictBridge Connection light is green, and the Error light is red.

  • Cause
    The product does not support the command that was requested from the camera.

If you have completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.
