This document pertains to HP and Compaq Desktop computers with Windows XP.
After performing a normal or full system recovery, the computer is more open to security problems because it does not contain the most recent security updates. Use the following sections to ensure the computer is properly updated and secure.
If you performed a non-destructive recovery and you want to find your previous documents and files, click My Computer
, and then click the C: drive
. Click Documents and Settings
and look for your old account folder such as Owner\Pavilion or perhaps even a number. Click the folder to open it to try to find your old files. If they are in the folder, copy them to the newly created My Documents folder. If you cannot access the folders, use the HP support document Unable to Access Data from User Accounts after a System Recovery in Windows XP
to change the user permissions so you can access and retrieve your files from the previous user account.
First, determine whether or not your computer with Windows XP has service pack 2 or greater installed and use the appropriate section in this document.
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and select Properties.
On the General tab, under System, the Service Pack version is listed.
