HP 7580B, 7585B, and 7586B Plotters - Loading Pens, Carousels, and Digitizing Site

loading the pens and carousels
Start with either fiber-tip or roller-ball pens for your first plotting effort and select the appropriately labeled pen carousel. Use chart paper with fiber-tip pens and either chart paper or tracing bond with roller-ball pens. The following procedures also apply to drafting pens and carousels.
  1. Select the pen type and pen colors to be loaded into each position of the carousel. Any number of pen positions may be used.
  2. Check that the carousel type corresponds to the pen type.
  3. Remove the pens from their packages. Uncap and load each pen into the carousel, following these steps.
    1. With the thumb and forefinger of one hand, pull down a plunger, bracing your other fingers against the lower rim of the carousel. Lowering the plunger first in this way helps to prevent damage to the pen's tip.
    2. With the other hand, position the pen collar just below the rounded notch and slide the pen straight into the pen holding jaws.
    3. Gently release the plunger so that the cap fits over the tip of the pen. Pull the plunger down again and release it to assure that the cap seals without binding.
  4. Place the carousel over the spindle in the plotter so that the hole in the base of the carousel fits over the projection beside the spindle. Rotate the carousel slightly until it drops into position on the spindle. No force is required. After the carousel is properly seated, the carousel will make two revolutions, indicating the initialization sequence is being performed
  5. To remove the carousel, lift it straight up.
Loading the Digitizing Site
The digitizing site can be loaded either into any of the carousels or directly into the pen holder.
Loading digitizing site into the carousel
  1. Remove the rubber cap from the selected position. This provides space for the wide digitizing tip and permits the plunger to retract fully and seat properly in the plotter.
  2. Load the digitizing site by following the above procedure for loading a pen.
loading the digitizing site into the pen holder
  1. Insert the collar into the groove on the front part of the pen holder.
  2. Rotate the digitizing site so that the top of the site is toward you.
