HP Jetdirect Print Servers - Scan Button Does Not Appear Using the Embedded Web Server

Issue:
When using supported multi-function products, the scan button does not appear using the embedded Web server (EWS) on the HP Jetdirect external print server.
Solution
The problem arises from using a Jetdirect that does not support all-in-one printers, or from a communication difficulty. Check first to make sure you have a supported configuration, and then continue with troubleshooting communication.
Supported configurations
The Embedded Web Server scan button will not appear using an External Jetdirect 170x, 300x, or 500x connected to an HP LaserJet all-in-one product. The EWS scan feature is only available with the HP Jetdirect print servers using the newer firmware X.21.12 or greater.
Scanning using the HP Jetdirect 170x, 300x, or 500x print servers is possible, only when using the HP LaserJet scanning software, and only on a peer-to-peer or direct-mode network.
Troubleshooting communication
Verifying parallel setup
  1. For peripherals with parallel ports, make sure the parallel cable is IEEE 1284 compliant.
  2. Verify that the HP Jetdirect firmware is x.08.32 or higher. Click here to download HP Download Manager software to upgrade the Jetdirect firmware. (http://www.hp.com/go/dlm_sw)
  3. Print a Configuration page from the HP Jetdirect.
  4. Look for the Parallel Port 1 to read ECP2/1284.4, ECP2/MLC or MLC (Multiple Logic Channels).
  5. If not, use the one of the three methods listed below to modify the settings.
Using the embedded Web server to change the parallel handshaking
  1. Type in the IP address of the HP Jetdirect into the "Address" or "Location" field of an Internet browser. (The EWS supports current versions of Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.)
  2. Click Administration.
  3. Click Configuration.
  4. Select ECP2/1284.4, ECP2/MLC or MLC under the "Preferred Parallel mode."
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Unplug the power cable from the HP Jetdirect and plug it back in.
     note:
The HP Jetdirect firmware must be at x.08.32 or higher to change the parallel handshaking via the EWS.
Using HP Web Jetadmin to change the parallel handshaking
  1. Open HP Web Jetadmin and select the print server's name in the list of available devices or use the "Quick Find" field to find a specific IP address.
  2. Select to highlight the printer and select Open Device or double-click the printer.
  3. Select Configuration.
  4. Select Device.
  5. Select ECP2/1284.4, ECP2/MLC or MLC next to "Parallel mode."
  6. Select Apply.
  7. Unplug the power cable from the HP Jetdirect and plug it back in.
Using HP Jetadmin to change the parallel handshaking
  1. Open HP Jetadmin (obsolete) and select the print server's name in the list of available devices. HP Jetadmin has been obsolesced. Click here for new software options (http://www.hp.com/cposupport/networking/support_doc/c04675275.html).
  2. Select Modify from the list of options under the Device heading.
  3. Select Next until the last screen appears labeled "Jetdirect/Ex Settings."
  4. Change the Jetdirect/Ex setting, Parallel Mode: Speed of Setting to ECP2/1284.4, ECP2/MLC or MLC.
  5. Select Finish.
  6. Unplug the power cable from the HP Jetdirect and plug it back in.
Verifying USB setup
  1. For peripherals with USB ports, make sure the USB cable is high quality and in good condition.
  2. Verify that the HP Jetdirect firmware is x.08.32 or higher.
  3. When using a USB connected HP Jetdirect, make sure both lights on the HP Jetdirect are on green and not blinking.
  4. Print a Configuration page from the HP Jetdirect.
  5. Look for the Communication mode to read "IEEE 1284.4."
  6. If not, use the embedded Web server to modify the settings.
Using the embedded Web server to change the USB settings
  1. Type in the IP address of the HP Jetdirect into the "Address" or "Location" field of an Internet browser. (The EWS supports current versions of Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.)
  2. Click Network.
  3. Click USB Settings.
  4. Select Automatic or MLC under "Desired Communication mode."
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Unplug the power cable from the HP Jetdirect and plug it back in.
Using HP Web Jetadmin to change the USB settings
  1. Open HP Web Jetadmin and select the print server's name in the list of available devices or use the "Quick Device Find" field to find a specific IP address.
  2. Select to highlight the printer and select Open Device or double-click the printer.
  3. Select Configuration.
  4. Select Device.
