There are two types of resets that can be done to the HP 38g calculator.
HP 38g Calculator - Resetting the Calculator
Resetting to retain stored data
If the calculator locks up and seems to be stuck, it will need to be reset. This is similar to resetting a PC. It cancels certain operations, restores certain conditions, and clears temporary memory locations. It does not clear stored data such as variables, aplet databases, and programs.
Follow these instructions to reset the calculator:
Reset using Keystrokes
Press and hold the ON key and the top-row left-middle key (top row, third from left) simultaneously, then release both.
Reset using the reset hole
If the calculator does not respond to the above key sequence, try the following:
Turn over the calculator and locate the small hole below the bump (upper right). Insert the end of a straightened metal paper clip into the hole until it reaches the bottom. Hold it there for one second, then remove it.
Press ON. If necessary, press and hold the ON key and the top-row left-middle key (top row, third from left) simultaneously, then release both.
Resetting to erase all memory and restore factory defaults
If the calculator does not respond to any of the above resetting procedures, it may be necessary to restart it by erasing all memory.
note:Restarting will erase everything stored, including variables, aplet databases, and programs.
To erase everything stored in the calculator and restore the factory-default settings:
Press and hold ON.
Press and hold the leftmost top-row key and the rightmost top row key so that all three keys are pressed simultaneously.
Release all three keys.
