HP Jornada 540, 545, 547, and 548 - Resolving Microsoft® Money Database Corruption Caused by Lock-ups

Introduction
If Microsoft Pocket Money locks up, it may corrupt the data file. This will result in database errors and the inability to synchronize Microsoft Money on the HP Jornada to the desktop PC. Use the steps in this document to resolve this issue.
Step 1: Synchronize the .MNY file
To fix the Microsoft Money file on the HP Jornada, follow these steps:
  1. On the desktop PC, open Microsoft ActiveSync.
  2. Click the Options icon.
  3. Highlight Microsoft Money and select Settings.
  4. Under File to Sync With select Browse.
  5. Browse to the desktop computer's Microsoft Money folder, and select the file SAMPLE.mny.
  6. Synchronize the SAMPLE.mny database to the HP Jornada.
  7. Repeat Steps 1 - 4 of Step 1.
  8. Browse to the desktop computer's Microsoft Money folder and select the original *.MNY data file.
  9. Synchronize with the original *.MNY data file, and it should restore the data correctly on the HP Jornada.
     caution:
    When re-synching Microsoft Money files, there will be a choice to Replace All Files On My Device or On This Computer. ALWAYS choose the Replace All Files On My Device Option.
If the above procedure corrected the problem, do not proceed to Step2.
Step 2: Hard reset and restore database
Only use this procedure if synchronizing the .MNY file in the procedure in Step 1 does not correct the problem. The method below will erase all of the data from the HP Jornada. Follow these steps in the order given:
 caution:
To avoid loss of data, make sure to synchronize all data to the desktop PC before beginning.
  1. Perform a hard reset on the HP Jornada by following the steps below.
    1. Disconnect all cables attached to the HP Jornada, including the AC adapter.
    2. Use the tip of the stylus to press and hold the RESET button on the back of the HP Jornada.
    3. While holding the RESET button, press the ON/OFF button.
    4. Release the RESET button.
    5. Press the ON/OFF button again to restart the HP Jornada.
    At this point, set up the Pocket PC (for example, calibrate stylus, enter owner information, and the date and time). When this is complete, proceed to Step 2.
  2. Delete the current partnership, and set up a new temporary partnership.
    1. With the HP Jornada disconnected from the PC, open Microsoft ActiveSync on the desktop PC.
    2. Click File, then Delete Partnership.
    3. Follow the prompts to delete the partnership.
    4. After the old partnership is deleted, connect the HP Jornada to the PC.
    5. Form a new partnership.
       note:
      When setting up this partnership, choose to synchronize only files, since this is a temporary partnership.
    When the new partnership is formed, proceed to Step 3.
  3. Install Microsoft Money on the HP Jornada.
    1. Insert the Microsoft ActiveSync 3.1 CD into the desktop PC.
    2. Browse to the Extras folder.
    3. Open the Microsoft Money folder and double-click the SETUP.EXE file.
    Microsoft Money may look like it is installing on the PC, but it is actually preparing to be loaded into the HP Jornada. When it is finished, there will be a message indicating that, either the program has been loaded onto the HP Jornada, or it will load the next time the mobile device is connected to the PC.
     note:
    This Microsoft Money Sync update will not update a version of Microsoft Money older than Microsoft Money 2000.
    When the Microsoft Money update has been successfully installed on the HP Jornada, restart the PC and proceed to Step 4.
  4. Delete the temporary partnership, and set up a new partnership with Microsoft Money empty.
    1. Disconnect the HP Jornada from the PC.
    2. On the desktop PC, open Microsoft ActiveSync.
    3. Click File, then click Delete Partnership.
    4. Follow the prompts to delete the partnership.
    When the partnership has been deleted, proceed to Step 5.
  5. Create a new partnership.
    1. Connect the HP Jornada to the PC and form a new partnership.
    2. This time, choose to synchronize Microsoft Money and whatever else you wish to synchronize.
    When the new partnership is formed, proceed to Step 6.
  6. Allow the data to sync to the HP Jornada with no data in Microsoft Money.
The issue should now be resolved.
