HP Jornada 680 and 680e - HP Jornada 680 and 680e Handheld PC User's Guide Addendum

Introduction
This document reproduces the text of the HP Jornada 680 and 680e Handheld PC User’s Guide Addendum. Please read this addendum carefully. It provides information on added features and changes not described in the User's Guide.
What is in the addendum?
In this addendum you will find instructions to help you:
  • Use the expansion module
  • Configure the built-in modem (model 680 only)
  • Change MIME encoding settings for POP3 e-mail
  • Install the revised version of HP Settings (model 680e only)
  • Troubleshoot common problems
  • Get in touch with HP Customer Care Centers
Using the expansion module
The HP Jornada has a unique expansion module with two slots to accommodate both the PC Card and the CompactFlash Card in a small, portable size. You can install either the PC Card or CompactFlash Card, or install both at the same time.
PC Card
The PC Card fits in the slot on the left side of the HP Jornada. When installing the PC Card, slide it carefully into the PC Card slot. The expansion module will extend from the bottom of the unit. When ejecting the PC Card, do not obstruct the slot opening, nor hold down the expansion module. Press the PC Card release tab to eject the PC Card. The PC Card will be pushed out of the slot slightly, allowing you to grab it and pull out completely. When using thicker PC Cards (for instance PCMCIA I/O Cards), you may initially feel some slight resistance when pulling out the card. Once the card is out, ensure that the expansion module resides back into the device. Gently push it further down if necessary.
CompactFlash Card
The CompactFlash Card slot is located at the bottom of the unit, on the top of the PC Card slot. Pressing the latch-bar will flip open the slot door.
To install a CompactFlash Card
  1. Press a latch-bar at the opening of the slot with your finger while holding down the opposite end of the expansion module with your thumb, as shown in the diagram below (see Figure 1).
Figure : Installing a CompactFlash card
     note:
To open the expansion module when taking out an installed CompactFlash Card, you may find it convenient to use the stylus instead of your finger into the groove between the CompactFlash card and the latch-bar.
  2. Slide the CompactFlash Card into the slot. The finger pull (raised edge) on the CompactFlash Card face up, and the main label down.
  3. Close the expansion module by pushing down until it clicks into place.
Configuring the built-in modem
Please note that the information below replaces the instructions given in the User’s Guide (Chapter 2, page 23 and Chapter 7, page 148).
Your HP Jornada and the built-in modem are designed to meet the regulatory requirements within the country of purchase only. To use the modem, you must first set the modem configuration using the HP country selector application.
The HP country selector starts automatically after you have completed the Welcome Wizard. Or, you can start this application at any time by tapping the HP country selector icon in the Control Panel.
In the HP country selector application, select the country where you purchased your HP Jornada. Do not select another country, or use the HP Jornada built-in modem in a country other than the country of purchase. It is recommended to use an approved PC Card modem in other countries, to ensure the regulatory requirements are met. For a list of approved PC Card modems, go to the HP Jornada Accessories page on the Hewlett Packard Web site.
Changing MIME settings
Please note that the information below replaces the information given in the User’s Guide (Chapter 6, page 115).
By default, if your installed e-mail service is POP3, Inbox uses MIME when sending attachments. When you experience problems sending or receiving file attachments, try disabling the MIME encoding. If you are using HP dialup to make Internet connections, MIME encoding is disabled by default.
To disable MIME encoding
  1. In the Inbox, select Services.
  2. Tap Options.
  3. Select the service.
  4. Tap Properties.
  5. Tap Next, then uncheck the Send using MIME format check box.
Installing the revised version of HP Settings
To avoid any registry problems when using bFAX Pro, we strongly advise modem 680e users to download the revised version of HP Settings from the HP Palmtop Customer Care Web site. Click here to locate the HP Palmtop Customer Care download page.
See the Troubleshooting section for more details.
Troubleshooting
Modem not listed in drop down list
bFAX Pro does not list any modems in the Modem to use drop-down list (for model 680e only). The registry setting for bFAX Pro may have been changed while using HP Settings. To correct the registry:
  1. Download the Registry Setting Program to the Windows directory on your HP Jornada. Click here to locate the Registry Setting Program download page.
  2. Execute registra.exe by double-clicking on the icon.
  3. Delete registra.exe.
  4. Perform a soft reset to return the bFAX Pro registry to default settings. (See the Resetting section in the User’s Guide, page 160.)
  5. In bFAX Pro, do the following:
    1. Tap Options.
    2. Tap Communications.
    3. Select PC Card Modem on COM2 as the modem to use.
    4. Select 14400 as the maximum rate, then type “ATX0S0=2” in the Modem Initialization String box.
    5. Click OK.
Display screen is not displayed properly
The HP Jornada does not display the welcome screen properly when installing the main battery or connecting to the AC power for the first time or after full reset. To resolve this issue, remove the main battery and disconnect the AC adapter, then reinsert the main battery and reconnect to AC power. The unit will now boot up normally, and the welcome screen will appear.
