HP Jornada and Palmtop PDA's - Resolving Grayed-Out Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Inbox when Setting Up a New Partnership in ActiveSync

Introduction
This document explains how to resolve a problem encountered when setting up a new partnership in Microsoft (R) ActiveSync. The Contact, Calendar, Tasks, and Inbox are grayed-out (not available to select) when setting up a new partnership in ActiveSync. This occurs when Microsoft Outlook was not installed, or a profile was not established prior to setting up the initial partnership.
Information
To resolve this, follow the steps below to delete the partnership, install Microsoft Outlook, and then establish a new partnership.
  1. Disconnect the HP Jornada or Palmtop PDA from the PC.
  2. On the PC, Open Microsoft ActiveSync.
  3. Click File, then Delete Partnerships to remove any previously created partnerships.
  4. Install Microsoft Outlook from the installation file (setup.exe) for Microsoft Outlook 2002 found on the Microsoft CD provided with your PDA.
    • The HP Jornada 560 CD has the setup.exe file in the \MS\Outlook folder.
    • For other models, the setup.exe can be found in the \Extras\Outlook folder on the CD.
  5. Open Microsoft Outlook and follow the prompts to set up your Personal Folders on the desktop computer. (The result of this will be an outlook.pst file on the desktop which will store the Personal Information Manager (PIM) data).
     caution:
    To avoid losing data, be sure to delete the partnership before reconnecting your PDA to the PC.
  6. After Outlook is configured and opened, connect the HP Jornada to the PC and set up a new partnership.
The PIM information should now be available for use.
