HP Jornada 560 Series PDA - Connecting Directly to an E-mail Server

Introduction
This document describes setting up Inbox on the HP Jornada 560 to send and receive e-mail using POP3 or IMAP protocols.
 note:
Internet use requires separately purchased modem; connect time charges may apply. Some Web sites or Web content may be unavailable. Check with your service provider for availability in your area.
Before beginning
The following information should be gathered before beginning the steps below. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or network administrator can provide all of the following information:
  • E-mail User ID
  • E-mail Password
  • Incoming mail server name
  • Outgoing mail server name
  • E-mail address (for example: email@domain.com)
     note:
In addition to the information listed above, a connection to the Internet must already be established before these steps will work. Set up a connection with your ISP before continuing.
Step 1: Configuring the inbox
Complete the following steps to configure the Inbox.
  1. Install your modem and connect to a phone jack.
  2. Tap Start and then Inbox.
  3. Tap Services and then New Service.
  4. Type your complete e-mail address. For example, type email@domain.com (hint: tap Shift to view the @ key) and then tap Next. The HP Jornada will dial out and attempt to auto-configure your e-mail settings.
  5. Tap Next when Completed shows in the Status field.
  6. Complete the User name and Password fields and then click Next. The User name and Password information is the information obtained from the ISP.
  7. Select POP3 or IMAP from the Service type drop-down menu, type a unique name in the Name field, and then tap Next.
  8. Complete the Incoming mail and Outgoing mail fields with the information obtained from the ISP but leave the Domain field blank. Tap Finish to complete the setup.
Step 2: Accessing the e-mail
Complete the following steps to access email:
  1. Click Start and then Inbox.
  2. Tap the Send and Receive icon located on the bottom navigation bar that looks like two envelopes.
  3. Follow the prompts.
Definitions
The following definition for POP3 and IMAP are general. If uncertain which protocol is used for your e-mail, contact the ISP (most likely POP3) or the system administrator (most likely IMAP).
POP3
POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is the most recent version of a standard protocol for receiving e-mail. This protocol is used with all dial-up ISP accounts. With POP3, the e-mail is received and stored at a dial-up ISP until it is downloaded, then is no longer stored on the server.
IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail from a local server. This protocol is generally used for accessing e-mail on a company network. With IMAP, the e-mail is viewed or changed on the network. With IMAP, a connection to the network is required to work with e-mail. To connect using IMAP, the network being accessed must use IMAP4 protocol with Microsoft (R) Exchange 5.5 or higher.
