HP Jornada 520 and 540 Series PDA - Creating a Modem Connection to an ISP

Introduction
This document describes the steps for setting up a modem connection to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) with an HP Jornada 520 or 540 series PDA.
 note:
Internet use requires separately purchased modem; connect time charges may apply. Some Web sites or Web content may be unavailable. Check with your service provider for availability in your area.
Before starting
Gather the following information before completing the steps below. Contact your ISP for any information that you are unsure of:
  • ISP login user ID
  • ISP login password
  • Primary DNS numbers (Example: 204.127.160.2)
  • Secondary or Alt DNS numbers (Example: 204.127.129.2)
  • ISP local access number
Step 1: Install the modem
Complete the following steps to install the modem:
  1. Visit the HP Jornada 520 accessory page or the HP Jornada 540 accessory page to verify that the modem is compatible with your product.
  2. Soft reset the HP Jornada with the modem removed.
  3. Install the modem using the manufacturers instructions.
Step 2: Configure the modem
Complete the following steps to configure the modem.
  1. On the HP Jornada, tap Start and then Settings.
  2. Tap the Connections tab.
  3. Tap the Modem icon.
  4. Tap New Connection.
  5. In the Enter a name for the connection field, type a name for the connection.
  6. In the Select a modem drop down list, choose the appropriate modem.
  7. In the Baud rate drop down list, select 57600.
  8. Tap Advanced.
  9. Tap the Name Servers tab.
  10. Tap User specific server address.
  11. Enter the primary DNS in the DNS field and the secondary DNS in the Alt DNS field and then tap OK.
  12. Tap Next.
  13. Complete the Country code (1 in the US), Area code, and Phone number fields with the ISP local access number and then tap Next.
  14. Tap Finish.
Step 3: Connecting
Complete the following steps to make the connection.
  1. Tap Start, Programs, and then Connections.
  2. Tap the connection created in Step 5 of the Configure the modem section above.
  3. Complete the Username and Password fields with the information provided by your ISP.
  4. Select Save password.
  5. Verify that the phone number entered in Step 13 of the Configure the modem section above shows correctly in the Phone field. If the phone number is not correct, tap the Dialing properties button and make the necessary changes.
     note:
The Work setting in the Dial from field puts a 9 in front of the number to reach an outside line. If dialing from home or if no prefix is needed to reach an outside line, change the Dial from location to Home. Also, the T in front of the phone number indicates a tone dialer.
  6. Click Connect. The PDA will beep and the Connected window will display when the PDA successfully connects to the ISP.
Step 4: Disconnecting
Complete the following steps to disconnect from the ISP:
  1. To disconnect from the ISP, tap Start and then Today.
  2. Tap the Connection icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
  3. Tap Disconnect.
