Issue
While synchronizing an HP Jornada or Palmtop PC with Outlook 97, 98, or 2000, the following error message displays:
"Error 801000B: Unable to expand the folder. The set of folders could not be opened. Errors could have been detected in the file..."
Solution 1
This error message displays when the *.OST or *.PST file becomes corrupted. These files are where all Outlook data (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Email) is stored on the desktop PC. The files are corrected by running the Inbox Repair Tool.
Outlook 2000
Complete the following steps to run the Inbox Repair Tool and resolve the error message:
  1. Click Start, then Run.
  2. Type the following in the Open field for Windows NT and 2000:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT\scanpst.exe
Type the following in the Open field for Windows 95, 98, and Me:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\95\scanpst.exe
  3. Click OK. The Inbox Repair Tool will open.
  4. Click Browse.
  5. Click the drop-down arrow and browse to the location of the *.OST or *.PST file. The default location for the *.OST and *.PST files is C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
  6. Select the *.OST or *.PST file.
  7. Click Start and follow the instructions on the screen.
Outlook 98 and 97
Complete the following steps to run the Inbox Repair Tool and resolve the error message:
  1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then click Inbox Repair.
  2. Click Browse.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow and browse to the location of the *.OST or *.PST file. The default location for the *.OST and *.PST files is C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
  4. Select the *.OST or *.PST file.
  5. Click Start and follow the instructions on the screen.
Solution 2
If Solution 1 does not resolve the error message, reset the device to the factory default settings (hard reset), then synchronize again.
