HP Jornada/Palmtop - Backing up and Restoring Files Using ActiveSync 3.1 or 3.5

Introduction
This document explains how to backup information on a Jornada/Palmtop device and how to restore the information from that backup in Microsoft ActiveSync 3.1 or 3.5.
Backup
To initiate a backup of the unit through ActiveSync 3.1 or 3.5 on the desktop, complete the following steps:
  1. On the Desktop PC, open ActiveSync.
  2. Click Tools then Backup/Restore.
  3. Click Change to specify a name and location for the backup file (see the “Additional backup notes” section below).
  4. Click Change to specify a different location and name for the backup file.
  5. Choose Full Backup or Incremental Backup.
  6. Full Backup will save all information saved on the device.
  7. Incremental Backup - Used when a Full Backup has been previously done on the unit. It will scan for new information not saved in a previous backup.
  8. Check Automatically back up each time the device connects if desired.
Additional backup notes
Saving several dated versions of the backup could save time and data if the device and some of the backup information becomes corrupted. Different backup versions allow the device to be restored to a particular date instead of starting completely over.
Also, critical backup data should be saved to some media other than the hard drive. The backup file can be located on the desktop PC by searching (click Start, Find, Files and Folders) for *.stg.
Restore
Complete the following steps to restore data from a backup file.
  1. Attach the unit to the PC and when prompted - Do not set up a new partnership
  2. Click No to sign on as a guest.
  3. Click Next.
  4. When connected as a guest, go to Tools, Backup/Restore.
  5. Click the Restore tab.
  6. Click Restore Now.
  7. Choose the name of your previous partnership, for example “Handheld_PC.”
  8. Click Restore.
  9. When the restore process is complete, disconnect the unit.
  10. Soft reset the unit following the directions in the User’s Guide.
  11. Reconnect the device.
  12. Click Yes to set up a partnership.
  13. Click Next and follow the prompts to set up a new partnership.
