HP Jornada 820 Handheld PC - Resetting the Handheld PC

What is a reset?
Occasionally, you will need to reset your HP Jornada 820 Handheld PC, for example, after you restore data from your desktop computer or when the operating system stops responding. There are two methods of resetting:
  • Soft reset -- A soft reset (also called "warm boot") is similar to restarting your desktop computer. It restarts the operating system, however all unsaved data in open document or program will be lost.
  • Full reset -- A full reset (also called "hard reset") restores your HP Jornada Handheld PC to its original state, erasing all information you have entered.
To ensure the safety of your information in case a full reset is necessary, you should regularly back up your data to your desktop computer (using Microsoft (R) Windows CE Services) or to a CompactFlash or PC Card (using the HP Jornada Handheld PC backup application).
Backing up and restoring data
To prevent loss of data, you should back up your HP Jornada Handheld PC data frequently. You can back up your HP Jornada Handheld PC two convenient ways:
  • Use Windows CE Services to back up all data to your desktop computer.
  • Use the HP Jornada Handheld PC backup application to back up only selected items, such as Pocket Outlook databases, to a PC Card or CompactFlash Card.
Using Windows CE Services Backup at your computer
The Windows CE Services Backup feature creates a complete duplicate of all data stored on your HP Jornada Handheld PC. If you routinely connect to your desktop computer, this is the best method of data backup. The backup file is saved on the hard disk of your desktop computer.
When you restore data from a backup file created by Windows CE Services, all data on your HP Jornada Handheld PC is replaced by the data in the backup file, including files you have created, programs you have installed, and any system settings and options you have set.
To access the Windows CE Services Backup feature, click Backup on the Tools menu in the Mobile Devices window. For more information about Windows CE Services Backup, see online help.
Using the HP Jornada Handheld PC Backup application on the road
HP Jornada Handheld PC backup provides a convenient way to back up Pocket Outlook data while you are traveling or while you are away from your desktop computer. You can back up the information to a PC Card or CompactFlash Card for secure storage. You can also back up data to a folder on your HP Jornada Handheld PC; however, this will not preserve the information in case you lose power or need to perform a full reset.
To back up data
  1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to HP Applications, and click HP Jornada Handheld PC backup.
  2. Click Backup.
  3. Choose one of the backup options:
    • Select Back Up Everything to back up all information stored in RAM, including files you have created, programs you have installed, and any system settings and options you have set.
    • Select Back Up PIMs to back up only your Pocket Outlook databases (Contacts, Tasks, and Calendar).
  4. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the backup process.
 note:
If you have both a CompactFlash Card and a PC Card installed, two folders appear in the My Handheld PC folder. The folder called Storage card represents the first card you inserted, and a folder called Storage card 1 represents the next card that was inserted.
To restore from a backup file
  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the HP Jornada Handheld PC backup icon.
  3. Click Restore Everything or Restore PIMS.
  4. Select the backup file you want to restore, then click Restore.
Your HP Jornada Handheld PC must have the same regional settings when you restore as you had when you completed the backup. Otherwise, you will not be able to restore the files. To change regional settings, on the Start menu, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and double-click the Regional Settings icon.
Soft reset
Perform a soft reset after restoring data from a backup file or when your Handheld PC appears to be "frozen" or "locked up."
To perform a soft reset
  1. Use a pen or a paperclip to press the Reset button on the keyboard.
 caution:
When you perform a soft reset you will lose unsaved data in all open documents or programs.
Full reset
Perform a full reset only when your Handheld PC does not respond to a soft reset. A full reset will erase all data you have entered, including all files, system settings, and programs you have installed. If you have forgotten your password, you will also need to perform a full reset.
 caution:
Performing a full reset erases all files, programs, and appointments that you have entered. You can restore only data that has been backed up to your desktop computer or to a PC Card or CompactFlash Card.
To perform a full reset
  1. Disconnect the ac adapter from your Handheld PC.
  2. Remove the main battery.
  3. Remove the backup battery tray.
  4. Wait at least 5 minutes, and then reinstall the batteries and reconnect the ac adapter. Your Handheld PC should turn on automatically, and display the Windows CE Welcome Wizard.
  5. Restore data to your HP Jornada Handheld PC from your most recent backup file.
