HP Palmtop/Handheld PCs - HP PIM Translator
The HP PIM Translation Utility Application is designed to allow HP Palmtop/Handheld PC users to transfer their existing Phone and Appointment Book data from their HP Handheld products (HP100/200LX and HP OmniGo Organizer Plus series) to HP Palmtop/Handheld PCs via Schedule+ and not Outlook. The implementation of this application only caters for a ONE-WAY transfer of data from HP Handheld products to HP Palmtop/Handheld PCs and not backward. The application also assumes that the HP PIM data files are already residing in the PC environment (on the hard disk drive or on a floppy running on Windows 95 or NT 4.0). The HP PIM data will have to be transferred from the HP Handheld products to the PC environment using the HP Connectivity solutions. These files are then converted via the data translation application and synchronized/restored to the HP Palmtop /Handheld PC.
The translation screen
The progress screen has common screens except for the current activity notification text and screen header.
The activity notification text and screen header types are:
Exporting Appointment data to Schedule+
Exporting Phone Book data to Schedule+
When translation is completed successfully, the application will display the message:
"Appointment Book file translation successfully completed."
"Phone Book file translation successfully completed."
The first screen is the Welcome screen, which allows you to choose which data file to convert. All database files from HP Handheld products have unique signatures, so that the input data file format will be identified automatically by the translation application.
The application will directly export HP PIM data by updating Schedule+ application records, using Schedule+ OLE function.
The Status button will display Status Screen, which shows the translation history so far.
The Help button will display help window.
The Close button closes the application.
note:You can convert multiple HP PIM data files one-by-one.
When you press the Appointments button from the Welcome screen, the application will ask for the data file via the File Open Dialog Box. Then, after you select the appointment database file, the application will start to analyze the data file to make sure the file is the correct PIM database, check for any file corruption, and count by record types.
After the analysis of the appointment book data file, the translation note screen displays. For the HP OmniGo 100/120 Organizer Plus data files, an ink data translation note displays. Other data files display the short form translation note screen without ink data notification.
When you press the Phone Book button from the Welcome screen, the application will ask for the data file using the File Open Dialog Box. Then, the application starts to analyze the data file to make sure the file is the correct PIM database, check for any file corruption, and count by record types and phone data fields.
The Phone Book field names and number of fields may be different from the standard palmtop PC, since you can modify the Phone Book database field structure.
Multiple input targeted to single output field
A target field name maybe used multiple times in this column. In this case, all the first column data will be appended in the order from the Field map table. If multiple input fields are targeted to "Notes" field, the input field name will appear with the data in note data in a separate line to show the origin of the data. In this case, the Notes data will be shown with the name. The colon (:) is used to separate field name and data. If you click a cell of the third column, the combo box (drop down list box) will be shown at the cell position with the possible field name lists defined. When you change the target field for the "Do not convert" item, the "copy to" symbol will appear again on the second column.
HP OmniGo 100/120 Organizer Plus field map
The phone data fields are fixed for HP OmniGo 100/120 Organizer Plus data files. Therefore, all fields may match to Schedule+ fields by the same name or by a default name defined by the translation application. Because ink data is not supported in Schedule+, the ink data notice displays at the bottom of the screen.
Since the Palmtop PC/Handheld Phone Book database files do not have ink data, the field mapping table height is expanded two more rows than the HP OmniGo 100/200 Organizer Plus phone book database files. The Phone Book field names and number of fields might differ from the standard palmtop PC, since you can modify the phone book database field structure.
After each translation is completed, whether it is successful or interrupted, the results are written onto the Status screen. The screen will show the current date, type of translation, translation status, file path, and file name. Updates occur after each translation activity. Continuous translation activity is listed in chronological order.
Corrupted database recovery
When opening a HP PIM database, the system checks the validity of the database. When the file is not normal, (for instance, no lookup table or appointment record chains are broken) it tries to recover the data by creating a lookup table and search links, unless the records are not deleted. The original database file is read-only, so it is not updated at all, but the system tries to translate as many records as possible.
Appointment book database
Two chains, the single occurrence chain and multiple occurrence chain, link all appointment data records. The impact of a single occurrence chain breaking is minimal, since it is linked day-by-day. But, only one chain exists for the multiple occurrence chain, so a break in the chain might cause you to lose hundreds of records.
The system searches the chains and binds them, and then processes the translation. If there are any corrupted records, they are counted. If only one chain is broken, all records are translated.
Phone book database
Phone Book records are individual and not chained. So, when the database is corrupted, record-by-record recovery is possible. When a record is not found, it is simply checked as a corrupted record.
The agreed upon usage model for the HP PIM Translation Utility application is Update Schedule+ directly using OLE function.
Schedule+ OLE Server
The HP PIM Translation utility writes directly into the Schedule+ application via Schedule+ OLE calls. Any converted HP records are inserted into the current Schedule+ data files on the PC. These new records will be transferred automatically to the HP Palmtop PC during the sync operation, when the device is docked into the cradle.
| PC Environment | | HP Handheld PC |
OLE Hot Sync ________________
___________ _________ | HP Handheld PC |
|HP PIM File|----> |Schedule+| -----> | Format |
|___________| |_________| |________________|
Schedule+ target file
Schedule+ can open multiple files (Schedule+ windows) at the same time. The HP PIM Translation utility searches the top windows when multiple Schedule+ file are opened. If no file is opened, the last logged Schedule file will be used as the target. The actual target file name is shown on the top left of the Schedule+ window, and its file extension is SCD (*.SCD).
No update while translation program is running
Windows 95 and NT allow you to update Schedule+ while the translation is in progress, but this may cause unpredictable errors so that the translation stops before it is finished. To prevent this possible disaster, it is strongly recommended that you do not use Schedule+ while in the translation process.
Schedule+ behavior after translation
There are some discrepancies after the HP PIM database file is translated to Schedule+. These behaviors should be considered "unsupported functions".
Repeating appointments on 31st day
In the HP Appointment application, when a repeating appointment is set on the 31st day, it is treated as the last day of the month, and will be shown at the end day of a month for shorter months. Of course, if it is defined on a shorter month it will not be treated as the last day of the month to other months.
In Schedule+, any date is treated as the absolute day of the month. Even if it is defined as the 31st day of a month, it will not be shown on a shorter month. Therefore, a repeating event falling on the 31st of the month will not be converted in months without a 31st.
Translated character display
The character codes of all three platforms (PC, OmniGo 100/120, Palmtop PC 100/HP 200LX and OmniGo 700LX) are different. This is due to different character code systems implemented. Because of this, the results of the character translation may not be the same as the one in the original platform. If any character from the handheld products do not have a matching character in the PC, it will be translated to a space. For example, table drawing graphics characters from HP100/200LX data will lose the graphic frame for the table, since it is translated to space characters. The space character is chosen to maintain the position of the character. Even if the characters are translated to PC code, some characters may not be seen as normal characters, due to the font used for Schedule+ (MS Sans Serif). This font does not have images for character codes 128 through 158, but the translation code is designed to translate any valid character for the PC to make it displayable when the text is used in another font.
The alarm setting for passed appointment
In the HP Appointment application, the alarm setting is kept, even when the date is passed, but in Schedule+, the alarm is removed when the date is passed. This operation is performed automatically by Schedule+. As a result, the alarm for passed events will not be checked in Schedule+.
