HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs - Translating Phone / Appointment Files

Issue:
Translating files from an HP 100/200LX Palmtop PC or HP OmniGo 100/120 Organizer to the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC.
Solution
The HP Personal Information Manager (PIM) is a set of tools that helps you organize and keep track of your personal information. The HP PIM includes two applications:
  • The Phone Book for names, addresses, and phone numbers.
  • The Appointment Book for appointments, events, and ToDo lists.
The HP PIM Translation Utility allows you to translate existing Phone and Appointment Book data to Microsoft (R) Schedule+ 7.0a. (Copies of the Phone and Appointment Book data should already have been moved to the desktop PC from the HP 100/200LX Palmtop PC or HP OmniGo 100/120 organizer.) After you translate a Phone Book or Appointment Book, you can work with the data in Schedule+ or synchronize your Schedule+ database with an HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC.
Before you begin the translation, you must do the following:
  • Install Microsoft Schedule+ v 7.0a on your desktop computer. (To determine your version of Microsoft Schedule+, start Schedule+. The version number will be displayed in the lower right corner of the introduction screen.)
  • Install H/PC Explorer software on your desktop computer.
  • Identify and locate the files on the desktop computer containing the Phone Book and Appointment Book data from the HP 100/200 Palmtop PC or HP OmniGo 100/120 organizer. (If the data has not already been transferred to the desktop computer, please do so using an appropriate connectivity solution, such as CPACK, IntelliSync, Transfile WIN 200, etc.)
The translation process is as follows:
  1. Install the HP PIM Translation Utility on the desktop PC. To install the Translation Utility:
    1. Insert the CD-ROM labeled HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs into the CD-ROM drive of your desktop PC.
    2. The CD-ROM will be automatically detected and the installation wizard launched.
    3. If this does not happen, open the Start menu, choose Run, and then type d:\setup.exe, where d is the letter assigned to the drive containing the HP CD-ROM.
    4. Choose Next. At the install menu, check HP PIM Translation, and then choose Start Install. Follow the instructions on the Install window.
  2. To launch the HP PIM Translation Utility application, choose Start, Programs, HP PIM Translation, and HP PIM Translation Utility.
  3. To translate an appointment data file:
    1. Choose Appointments in the Welcome screen.
    2. Specify the appointments data file to translate in the Open File dialog box that appears, and then choose OK. (This is the file you transferred to your PC from the HP 100/200LX Palmtop PC or the HP OmniGo 100/120 organizer.) If the file you specify is not a PIM database file of the appropriate type, an error message will be displayed.
    3. The Appointment Book Translation Note screen appears.
    4. Read the translation information, then choose Translate to proceed.
    5. The data translation progress screen appears, showing the progress of the current translation activity.
    6. When the translation has completed successfully, a message will appear. Choose OK to return to the Welcome screen.
     note:
To translate multiple PIM data files, you need to repeat the translation operation for each file separately.
     caution:
The Schedule+ application supports only daily and yearly repeated events. Because all of the translation goes through Schedule+, there is no direct mapping from earlier HP Palmtop products to Schedule+ for repeating weekly and monthly events. As long as you do not edit imported repeating weekly or monthly events in Schedule+ before your synchronize them with the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC, they will translate correctly into repeating events on the HP Palmtop PC. If, however, you edit them in Schedule+, they will lose their weekly / monthly attribute and will be treated as single events.
  4. To translate a phone book data file:
    1. Choose Phone Book in the Welcome screen.
    2. Specify the phone book data file to translate in the Open File dialog box, and then choose OK. If the file you specify is not a PIM database file of the appropriate type, an error message will be displayed.
    3. The Phone Book Translation Field Map screen appears. Modify the suggested field mappings, if necessary, and then choose Translate to proceed.
    4. Do not interrupt the translation. Wait until it is has been completed, or the Schedule+ files may not be correct.
  5. After each translation is finished, whether it completed successfully or was interrupted, the results will be written to the Status screen. Choose the Status button on the Welcome screen to see the history of any translations begun during the current execution of the HP PIM Translation Utility application.
  6. Choose Close to exit the application.
  7. Optional: Open Schedule+ to verify that the information translated correctly (choose Start, Programs, and then Schedule+).
  8. Start H/PC Explorer on the desktop machine (if it is not already running).
  9. Attach one end of the 9-pin synch cable to the desktop PC serial port that you identified during H/PC setup.
  10. Insert the other end of the cable into the serial port of your HP Palmtop PC. If the HP Palmtop PC is not already on, it will power on and synchronize automatically. You also may wish to attach an AC Adapter to the HP Palmtop PC.
  11. If you wish to manually synchronize your scheduling information, choose Synchronize Now in the H/PC Explorer Tools menu.
  12. If you have conflicting items, and you are resolving conflicts manually, a Resolve Conflict dialog box will display the items in conflict.
  13. To manually resolve conflicting items, follow the steps below:
    1. For each item listed in the Resolve Conflict dialog box, choose the button under the Action column to indicate which data you want to keep.
    2. Choose Synchronize to carry out the actions you specified. (If you choose Cancel, all of the items listed will still be in conflict the next time you synchronize.)
