HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs - Data Storage Cards

Issue:
Which data storage cards are supported by the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs?
Solution
PC Card data storage cards can be divided into three groups with respect to the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs:
  • Those that are recommended for use.
  • Those that are supported by the hardware, but are not recommended because of their limitations.
  • Those that are not supported because they do not work at all with the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs.
Recommended PC Card Memory Cards:
The HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs work best with HP Flash Disk cards that have 3.3V requirements. The HP part numbers for the recommended Flash Disk cards are:
  • F1215C (6 MB)
  • F1013C (10 MB)
  • F1014C (20 MB)
The HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs also work with 3.3V CompactFlash memory cards. The HP part numbers for the compact flash memory cards are:
  • F1302A (2 MB)
  • F1229A (2 MB)
  • F1231A (4 MB)
The HP 300LX Palmtop PC holds CompactFlash cards with the adapter in the PC Card slot. The HP 320LX Palmtop PC can hold the CompactFlash disk either in the PC Card port with the adapter or without the adapter in the compact flash port.
PC Card memory cards that are not recommended, but will function
The HP 300LX Series Palmtops can use PC Card 5V Flash Disk cards, but these Flash Disk cards are not recommended. The HP part numbers for the 5V Flash Disk memory cards are:
  • F1012B (5 MB)
  • F1013B (10 MB)
  • F1014B (20 MB)
While 5V Flash Disk cards will work with the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs, they are not recommended. These 5V Flash Disk cards can cause data loss when the batteries are in low power condition. The 5V Flash Disk cards can cause high power surges. The power surge can draw the battery voltage down below operating threshold and cause an HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC to shut down, which could result in the loss of unsaved work. If a 5V Flash Disk memory card is used, keep the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC plugged into the AC adapter to prevent loss of data.
SRAM cards also will work on the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs, but are not recommended because of two problems:
  • The SRAM card "Low battery warning" will not be displayed.
  • Setting the write protect tab to prevent writing to the SRAM card also prevents reading the SRAM card.
PC Card memory cards that will not function
The 12V Flash Disk memory cards will not work in the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs. The following HP part numbers are generally 12V Flash Disk cards:
  • F1012A (5 MB)
  • F1013A (10 MB)
  • F1014A (20 MB)
 note:
These same part numbers also were used on 5V Flash Disk cards. Therefore, a F1012A, F1013A, F1014A can be either a 5V or 12V Flash Disk card.
You can determine the voltage of F1012A, F1013A, and F1014A Flash Disk cards in one of two ways:
  • One way to tell the voltage is to look on the front of the flash disk card. The 12V Flash Disk cards read "12 Volts" on the top surface near the HP part number. The 5V Flash Disk cards have no reference to voltage on the front of the card.
  • Another way to determine the voltage on these three HP Flash Disk cards is to look on the back of the Flash Disk card for the "SDP" code.
    • If the card code has SDP-5, SDP-10 or SDP-20, the Flash Disk card requires 12 volts.
    • If card code has SDP5L-xx, SDP5-xx or SDP5A-xx, the Flash Disk card requires 5 volts.
    • If the card code has SDP3B-xx, the Flash Disk card runs on either 5 volts or 3.3 volts.
