HP 300LX Series Palmtop PCs - Error 628 on an HP 300LX Series

ISSUE: Error 628 on the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC is displayed when you attempt to synchronize with a desktop running Windows NT 4.0. Error 628 indicates "Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. Remote Networking could not start due to a critical error."
SOLUTION: If the error is occurring directly after attempting to log on from the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC, try the following:
  • Disconnect the synchronization cable, wait a few moments, then reconnect. If the synchronization cable is attached to the cradle, remove the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC from the cradle and dock it again.
  • Reset the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC by disconnecting the synchronization cable, closing all programs on the palmtop, removing the backup battery door, and pressing the red reset button inside of the backup battery compartment.
  • Check that the user name, password, and domain were entered correctly. It may be that the password entered into User Name may have changed (or was forced to change) on the desktop. To confirm that the password is still current, log onto the desktop using the name and password entered into User Name and Password on the handheld.
  • The account for the user name being used, such as "guest," may become disabled on the desktop. Check that the account is not disabled by using the User Manager (on the desktop, choose Start, point to Programs, Administrative Tools, and then choose User Manager).
  • The user name specified, such as "guest," might not have dialing permissions. Check the remote access permissions as follows:
    1. On the desktop, choose Start, point to Programs, Administrative Tools, and then choose Remote Access Admin.
    2. On the taskbar, choose Users, then Permissions.
    3. Select the desired user.
    4. Check that both "Grant dialing permissions to user" and "No Call Back" are checked for the selected user. Choose OK.
    5. Close the Remote Access Admin. application, and then restart the H/PC Explorer. Connect to the HP 300LX Series Palmtop PC.
