HP Deskjet 1220c Professional Series Printers - Printing from DOS Software Programs

HP Deskjet Control Panel overview
The HP Deskjet Control Panel for DOS is software that replaces the front panel switches found on older HP Deskjet printers. The Control Panel is not a printer driver; it must be used along with the DOS software's printer drivers. When there is no specific printer driver available in a program for the printer being used, the Control Panel allows access to some print settings and features that may not be available through the DOS program. If settings are available in both the DOS program's printer settings and the Control Panel, the settings made in the DOS program should override those made in the Control Panel.
 note:
The Control Panel does not support many of the special printing features. For more information, see the online help.
Installing the Control Panel for DOS from the Starter CD
Before installing the Control Panel, make sure the printer is set up and turned on.
  1. Insert the Starter CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Exit Windows to DOS and at the DOS prompt C:\>, type the CD-ROM drive letter followed by a colon (:) and press ENTER. For example, type D: and press ENTER.
  3. Type CD \DOS\DJCP, and then press ENTER. This will change to the directory containing the files for the Control Panel.
  4. Type INSTALL and then press ENTER.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
Download and install the Control Panel for DOS from the Internet
Before installing the Control Panel for DOS, make sure the printer is set up and turned on.
  1. Navigate to the support Web site for the printer at http://www.hp.com/support/dj1220c. Click here to go to the support Web site for the printer.
  2. Click Update Software & Drivers.
  3. Select MS-DOS (R).
  4. Select HP Deskjet Control Panel (DJCP) for DOS.
  5. Select Download Now.
  6. Select Save this Program to Disk and click OK.
  7. Select the folder where the downloaded file will be saved and then click Save.
  8. Navigate to the folder where the downloaded file is located and double-click the file.
  9. Select a folder where the files will be unzipped.
  10. Exit Windows to a DOS prompt.
  11. Change directories to the folder where the files are unzipped by typing CD FILEPATHNAME. For example, at the DOS C:\> prompt, type CD DJ1220\DJCP and then press ENTER.
  12. Type INSTALL and then press ENTER.
  13. Follow the directions on the screen to complete the installation.
Using the Control Panel for DOS
 note:
The Control Panel was not designed to run from Windows in a DOS shell. Errors may occur when running the Control Panel while shelled out to DOS.
  1. At the DOS prompt C:\>, type CD \HP1220C and press ENTER. This will change to the directory containing the files for the Control Panel.
  2. Type DJCP and press ENTER. This will start the Control Panel.
  3. Select printer settings that are not available from your DOS programs. Printer settings that are selected from a DOS program may override printer settings selected from the Control Panel.
  4. If desired, clean and align the print cartridges to obtain the best print quality. In general, the alignment is unnecessary when using the Control Panel. The HP Deskjet 1220c printer uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure that the print cartridges are aligned at all times.
DOS printer drivers
Because DOS programs are developed independently according to different standards, each DOS program requires its own printer drivers. If the DOS application does not show a selection for your specific printer, substitute (or use) a driver for a different HP Deskjet printer. In some cases, a substituted driver will not provide access to all of the printer's features.
The HP Deskjet 850 printer driver is the recommended substitute printer driver for the HP Deskjet 1220c series printer. If it is not available, use the HP Deskjet 600 or 500 series printer driver.
For DOS programs that do not provide support for HP Deskjet printers, HP LaserJet printer drivers can be used instead. Using HP LaserJet printer drivers will only provide capabilities for printing black and white (monochrome) documents.
