HP Deskjet 340 and 350 Series Printers - Paper Fails to Load from the Portable Sheet Feeder

Issue:
How do I fix my HP Deskjet 340/350 series printer's portable sheet feeder so that paper will load properly?
Solution
Follow the steps below:
  1. Remove the portable sheet feeder and print a self-test (using the manual feed slot on the rear of the printer). Follow these steps:
    1. Begin with the printer turned off.
    2. While holding down the PAPER FEED button, press and hold the POWER button for five (5) seconds and then release the POWER button.
    3. When the Power light blinks release the PAPER FEED button.
    4. When the Paper Feed light blinks, insert a sheet of paper into the manual feed slot.
       note:
If the paper does not feed from the manual feed slot, verify that it meets the media specifications for the printer (16-24 lb.). Try a different brand of paper, if possible.
  2. If the manual feed self-test is successful, rotate the small gear on the portable sheet feeder that is next to the sheet feeder's output slot and check for the following:
    • Ensure that the gear is not damaged.
    • Verify that turning the gear will make the internal components move.
    • Place one piece of paper in the portable sheet feeder, tighten the lever, and manually rotate the gear to verify that the feeder is operating correctly.
    • If the portable sheet feeder is operating correctly, check the gears on the printer for signs of damage.
  3. If the portable sheet feeder and the gears on the printer appear to be operating properly, reattach the portable sheet feeder to the printer. Make sure the gear on the sheet feeder and the gear on the printer mesh.
  4. Verify that the paper is correctly loaded into the portable sheet feeder. Remove the paper and load it using the steps below.
    • Use the recess at the top-center portion of the sheet feeder to pull the unit fully open.
    • Rotate each of the paper support arms until both point upwards.
    • Push the paper release lever down to the open position.
    • Slide the left paper width adjustment guide to the side of the sheet feeder.
    • Insert up to 30 sheets of paper in the sheet feeder. Move the left paper width adjustment guide against the paper until the guide clicks into position for US Letter, Legal, or A4 size paper.
    • Push the paper release lever up to press the paper against the rollers.
       note:
If the printer will not feed paper from either the manual feed slot or the portable sheet feeder, contact HP Customer Care.
