HP LaserJet Pro, Ultra Printers - 'Black Cartridge is Low' Message
This document is for HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fn, M130fw, M130nw, M132fn, M132fp, M132fw, M132nw, M132snw, M227d, M227fdn, M227fdw, M227sdn, and LaserJet Ultra MFP M134fn and M230sdn printers.
A Black Cartridge is Low or Very Low message displays when the amount of toner in the cartridge is below a certain percentage. This message is a reminder to have a replacement toner cartridge available.
You do not need to replace the toner cartridge until print quality becomes unacceptable.
You can change when the Black Cartridge is Low message displays by changing your Supply Settings options in the System Setup menu on the printer control panel.
Printers with a 2-line display
Change when the 'Black Cartridge is Low' message displays using the printer control panel.
note:
When a 'Black Cartridge is Very Low' displays on the HP LaserJet Ultra MFP M134fn printer, the printer completes the current print job, and then stops printing. You must replace the toner cartridge to continue printing.
Once the HP toner cartridge reaches Very Low, the HP Premium Protection Warranty ends.
Press the right arrow button until System Setup displays, and then press OK.
Press the right arrow button until Supply Settings displays, and then press OK.
When Black Cartridge displays, press OK.
Press the right arrow button until Low Threshold displays, and then press OK.
Use the Right and Left Arrow buttons to change the percentage of toner you want to remain in the cartridge when the Toner Low message displays again.
note:
HP recommends that you set the toner percentage to at least 8%. A lower percentage could reduce print quality.
Try to print the job again.
Printers with a touchscreen display
Change when the 'Black Cartridge is Low' message displays using the printer control panel.
note:
Once the HP print cartridge reaches Very Low, the HP Premium Protection Warranty ends.
From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe left, and then touch Setup.
Touch System Setup.
Touch Supply Settings, and then touch Black Cartridge.
Touch Low Threshold.
Using the numeric keypad, type the percentage of toner that you want to remain in the toner cartridge when the 'Toner Low' message displays again.
note:
HP recommends that you set the toner percentage to at least 8%. A lower percentage could reduce print quality.
Try to print the job again.
Purchase a replacement toner cartridge
Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.
