HP Color LaserJet 5500 and 5550 Series Printers - Installing the 500-Sheet Paper Feeder

Introduction
The optional 500-sheet paper feeders (Tray 3 and Tray 4) used with the HP Color LaserJet 5500/5550 series printers support paper sizes from 148 x 210 mm (5.8 x 8.3 inches) up to 297 x 432 mm (11.6 x 17 inches).
Tray 3 ships standard with the HP Color LaserJet 5500dtn series printer, and Tray 3 and Tray 4 ship standard with the HP Color LaserJet 5500/5550hdn series printer. Both optional trays are supported by all of the models in the HP Color LaserJet 5500/5550 series printers.

1. Remove the 500-sheet paper feeder and the printer stand from their boxes, and remove the packing materials. Save the boxes and the packing materials in case it is necessary to transport the 500-sheet paper feeder or printer stand later.

2. Place the printer stand in a prepared location.
 caution:
The prepared location must be level, sturdy, and must support all four corners of the printer.

3. Remove the trays from the printer and 500-sheet paper feeders and set them aside.

4. Remove the packing material from the trays.

5. Use the guide pins on the printer stand to align the 500-sheet paper feeder while lowering it onto the printer stand.

  1. Attachment screw
6. Insert an attachment screw into each of the four alignment holes. Using fingers or a coin, tighten the screws to attach the printer to the 500-sheet paper feeder.

7. If installing another 500-sheet paper feeder, align the second paper feeder with the guide pins on the first paper feeder.
8. Insert an attachment screw into each of the four alignment holes. Using fingers or a coin, tighten the screws to attach the 500-sheet paper feeder to the second 500-sheet feeder.
 note:
If one optional 500-sheet paper feeder is already installed and a second one is being added, unplug the printer and detach the printer from the first 500-sheet paper feeder to install the second one.
 warning:
If the printer is already set up, turn the printer off and unplug the power cord from both the printer and the power outlet.

9. Set up the printer: It takes four people to lift and move the printer. Grip the printer at the four corners and move it to the prepared location.

10. Use the guide pins on the 500-sheet paper feeder to align the printer while lowering it onto the paper feeder.

11. Gently lower the printer onto the 500-sheet paper feeder.
 caution:
Avoid bending the guide pins while lowering the printer.

  1. Attachment screw
13. Insert an attachment screw into each of the four alignment holes. Using fingers or a coin, tighten the screws to attach the printer to the 500-sheet paper feeder.

14. Adjust the rear guide by squeezing the guide adjustment latch and sliding the back of the tray to the size of the paper being loaded.
 note:
Verify that the switch is on the correct custom setting.

15. Slide the side guides to the desired size.

16. Load paper face-up. Load up to 500 sheets of 75 g/m2 (20 lb) stock in the 500-sheet feeder trays. Capacity may vary with other paper types. Always use paper and print media that meets HP specifications.

17. Insert the trays into the printer and the 500-sheet paper feeder.
 caution:
The trays are not interchangeable. Ensure that the correct tray is going into the correct feeder.

18. Plug in the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

19. Print a configuration page to ensure that all of the trays are installed correctly.
a. Press (Select).
b. Press (Down button) until INFORMATION appears.
c. Press (Select).
d. Press (Down button) until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears.
e. Press (Select) to print the page.
If the configuration page does not print, consult the CD User Guide.

20. On the configuration page, verify that the installed tray appears in the list of Paper Trays and Options.
 note:
If installed tray does not appear on the Configuration Page, reinstall the tray.
