The red X displays on the Network Connection icon when the computer is not connected to the network. The following list describes some of the reasons this might occur:
If the computer is not connected to a network, you can remove the red X by disabling the connection.
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet Connections.
  2. Click Network Connections, right-click the network, and then click Disable.
To enable the connection again, perform the preceding steps and click Enable.
 note:
To make this process easier in the future, drag the network icon from the Network Connections window onto the Windows desktop. This creates a desktop icon that you can right-click to enable or disable.
