Computer Runs Slow, Locks up, and Restarts for No Reason

If the computer runs slow, locks up, restarts for no reason in Windows XP, it may be diagnosed from the following aspects.
  1. Virus programs cause damage
    To determine whether the problem is caused by virus programs, you can use the latest antivirus software and the virus is generally detected.In addition, someone may maliciously intrude and install Trojan virus on your computer when you connect to Internet.Therefore, he may remotely control your computer, e.g., restart it.It is very difficult to remove some Trojan programs, so you'd better re-install the operating system.
  2. Problems occur in playing games
    When you are playing some large online games or 3D games, the computer sometimes automatically restarts or locks up; but when you do other work, the computer run well and does not restart automatically.The problem may lie in the memory or graphics card.
    You can remove the memory and graphics card (independent graphics card) from the motherboard, clean the dust on the slot, and re-install them on the motherboard.
    Some games have higher requirements for hardware, so your computer that doesn't reach the minimum configurations may restart or lock up during the games due to hardware overloading.In addition, if the temperature of some hardware (such as CPU, graphics card) is too high, the system will automatically restart or shut down the computer to protect hardware.

  4. Check CPU utilization.

  7. Is there any other hardware installed.

    If the computer has installed two or more antivirus software products, suggest keeping only one of them, and uninstalling all others.For example, the conflict between Norton and Rising may lead to slow operation or even freeze. If the computer has installed only one antivirus software product, update virus codes and then scan the system.If the computer hasn't installed antivirus software, suggest buying genuine antivirus software.
  10. Does the problem occur only when the computer accesses Internet?
    If yes, open the network firewall built in Windows XP to prevent malicious attack.If other network firewall programs are used, close them to test.
  11. Does the problem occur when the system starts?
    If yes, it may be caused by the program automatically opened during the system start.Enter into the safe mode to see whether the problem persists (repeatedly press F8 when HP logo appears, then select Safe Mode); if the problem doesn't exists in Safe Mode, it may be caused by the program automatically opened.
    To close this kind of program, click Windows Start Button and Operate in the safe mode, type msconfig to start System Configuration Utility Program, click Disable All in the Run tab page, and then click OK.The application won't automatically run when the system starts.
  12. If the system runs slow or locks up, will the hard disk drive LED be on and abnormal noise occur in the hard disk drive?
    If yes, use the disk check function of the system or the PC-Doctor disk provided with the computer; if the check fails and there is an error report, record the error report and contact Support; if the check passes, combine disk fragments and delete temporary files by clicking Windows Start Button, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Cleanup.
    If only the hard disk drive LED is on, the problem may be caused by the small memory and the frequent program accesses to hard disk drive for data exchange. Close all open programs; If an integrated graphics card is used, adjust the capacity of memory to release more space.
  13. If the computer automatically starts, is the power environment normal?
    When the utility power voltage is lower than the power voltage scope of the computer, the computer will restart or shut down.Because you cannot feel the change of the utility power voltage all the time, you may mistakenly assume that the computer restarts automatically.
  14. If all the diagnostic steps above fail:
