HP Printers - 'Paper Mismatch' Error (OS X)

This document is for all HP printers and Mac computers.
When printing photos, documents, or envelopes, one of the following error messages displays on the printer control panel or on the computer:
Paper Mismatch or Paper Size Mismatch
This error displays to make sure ink is not wasted when paper settings in the print driver do not match the paper loaded in the printer.
Step 1: Adjust the paper size setting
Check the paper size setting to make sure it matches the paper you want to print.
 note:
Some printers have an option to ignore the error and continue printing. If you choose to ignore the error, the margins on your printout might not be proportional to the edges of the paper.
  1. In the program you want to print from, click File, and then click Print.
  2. Select your printer from the Printer drop-down list.
  3. Click Page Setup, and then click Paper Size.

  4. Select the paper size that matches the size and type of paper loaded in the printer tray, and then click OK. If there are no matching paper sizes, select the size from the list that is closest to the size of the paper loaded in the tray.
  5. Try to print.
If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Reset the printer
Reset the printer to clear any hardware issues or error states.
  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
     note:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Update the driver
AirPrint drivers might not support printing on different paper sizes. To update the driver, remove your printer from the printer list, and then add the printer with the HP print driver.
  1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
  2. Depending on your version of OS X, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.

  7. Restart the Mac.

Step 4: Check the paper source setting
Remove and reload the paper in the input trays, and then check the paper source setting.
  1. Remove all the paper from all the printer input trays.
  2. Reload the paper, and then adjust the paper width guides so they gently rest against the edge of the paper stack.
  3. In the program you want to print from, click File, and then click Print.
     note:
If your printer only has one paper tray, skip to the step to Update the firmware. You do not need to select a paper source in the printer settings.
  4. Select your printer from the Printer drop-down list.
  5. Select the Paper Type/Quality or Media & Quality menu.
  6. Click Feed from or Source to select the correct paper tray.
  7. Try to print.
If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
Step 5: Update the firmware
If you recently upgraded your operating system, you might need to update the firmware to repair certain printer functions.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Firmware, and then click Download.
  5. Use the HP Download and Install Assistant for a guided firmware download and installation, or select Download only to manually open or run the driver file through your Internet browser’s download tools.
