HP Designjet 400 Series Printers - Color Upgrade Kit Overview

Description
The color upgrade kit converts an HP Designjet 430 printer into an HP Designjet 450C printer. The instructions for installing the color upgrade kit are included in the User's Guide and below.
 note:
The overall cost of an HP Designjet 430 printer plus the color upgrade kit is higher than the cost of an HP Designjet 450C printer.
Components
The following items are included in the color upgrade kit (C4718A):
  • Color upgrade and firmware SIMM (single inline memory module)
  • Color carriage label
  • Front panel overlay
  • 51640A - Black pen
  • 51644Y - Yellow pen
  • 51644C - Cyan pen
  • 51644M - Magenta pen
Requirements
HP Designjet 430 printer.
Compatibility
The color upgrade kit converts an HP Designjet 430 printer into an HP Designjet 450C printer, and is not backward compatible with any other HP Designjet printers.
No color upgrade kit exists to convert an HP Designjet 450C printer into an HP Designjet 455CA printer or an HP Designjet 488CA printer. The HP Designjet 455CA/488CA printer is designed for the maximum image quality required by such professionals as graphic artists. As it is unlikely that an engineer will become a graphic artist, an upgrade is not offered.
Installation
This section explains the tasks necessary to install the color upgrade kit.
  1. Ensure that the printer is turned off and that neither the power cord nor an interface cable is connected.
  2. Unscrew the cover plate at the back of the printer, and remove it.
     caution:
Before handling a SIMM, either put on a grounding wrist strap and attach the end to the metal chassis of the printer, or touch the outer metal surface of the printer with your hand. Otherwise, static electricity from your body could damage the SIMM.
  3. There are two SIMM slots in the printer. The SIMM containing the color upgrade must be inserted in the slot furthest from you. If both slots are free, skip this step and go to step 5. If the slot nearest to you already contains a SIMM, then you must first remove it to access the other slot.
    1. Gently push aside the two clips that hold the memory module in place.
    2. Holding it by the edges only, carefully pull the top of the module toward you and lift it out.
  4. Temporarily place the module on a conductive pad, such as the one containing the new SIMM.
  5. Remove the new SIMM from its bag being sure to hold it by the edges only .
  6. Hold the SIMM with the small notch on the left and the metallic edge away from you. Load the SIMM into the slot furthest from you. To do this:
    1. Hold the module at an angle.
    2. Place the bottom edge in the slot.
    3. Push the top away from you until the module clicks into place.
  7. Reinstall any SIMMs removed.
  8. Replace the cover plate and screws.
     warning:
Do not touch the very sharp stainless steel strip that runs the length of the printer behind the cartridge carriage. Keep hair, jewelry, clothing, and foreign objects away from the printer mechanisms.
  9. With the printer turned off, raise the cover and remove the black cartridge.
  10. Move the cartridge carriage out of the service station. Then remove the cover from the 3 left-hand cartridge slots by first squeezing on both sides, and then lifting off.
  11. Remove the cover from the 3 left-hand cartridge selectors.
    1. Release the clip on the right side of the cover near the bottom. This is easiest to see when looking down into the printer.
    2. Lift off the cover.
  12. Take the label containing four colored dots from the color upgrade kit.
    1. Remove the protective strip from the back of the label.
    2. Affix the label onto the vertical panel above the cartridge stalls while the cartridge is out of its stall. Note that the yellow dot must be on the left.
    3. Close the cover.
  13. Take the new front panel overlay from the color upgrade kit.
    1. Remove the protective layer from the back of the label.
    2. Affix it on top of the existing front panel overlay.
  14. Turn on the printer.
  15. From the color upgrade kit, take the three new colored cartridges (yellow, cyan and magenta) and, together with the black cartridge you removed earlier, install them in the printer’s four vacant cartridge stalls. Be sure to match the colors of the cartridges with the colors of the dots.
  16. Print a Setup Sheet to confirm that the printer has correctly read the new read-only memory (ROM) SIMM and has reconfigured itself to be an HP Designjet 450C printer.
  17. Finally, reconfigure the print driver(s) you are using to indicate that your printer is no longer an HP Designjet 430 printer, but an HP Designjet 450C printer. AutoCAD and Microsoft (R) Windows application drivers are included in the color upgrade kit.
