HP and Compaq PCs - How To Configure the Fax Console and Send a Fax (Windows XP)

Introduction
This document provides basic information on configuring the Fax Console and sending a fax with the HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario PC.
Before sending a fax, make sure:
  • The telephone cable is correctly plugged to the modem of the PC.
  • The modem that came with your PC is a fax modem and is able to send/receive faxes. Search for a product specification article from www.HP.com (in English). Use the PC model name and the search words "product specification" to determine what kind of modem is installed.
Installing a fax option
If the fax option has not been installed yet, follow the steps below to do it:
  1. Click Start, Control Panel, Printers and Other Hardware and click Printers and Faxes.
  2. Click Install a local fax printer or Set up faxing on the left area.

Configuring the fax option
Follow the steps below to install the fax option:
  1. Click Start, Control Panel, Printers and Other Hardware and click Printers and Faxes.
  2. Double-click on the fax icon, if you do not see the fax icon, go to Installing a fax option above, install a fax option, then continue with these steps.
     note:
    If you have not already setup an Internet connection, a dialogue box opens to request country, area code, and dialing type information.
  3. The Fax Configuration Wizard appears. Click on Next.
  4. Fill in the required Sender Information and click on Next.
  5. In the Select Device for Sending or Receiving Faxes window, select the modem to be used in the Please select the fax device list.
    The Enable Send option is selected by default.
    To receive faxes on the PC, select the Enable Receive option and the way that the faxes will be received, that is, manually or automatically.
    Click Next.
  6. In the Transmitting Subscriber Identification window, type the Transmitting Subscriber Identification (TSID) in the TSID box. This TSID information is the information that appears in the header area of the received faxes.
    Click Next and Finish.
For further changes in the fax console configuration:
  1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Fax, and then click Fax Console.
  2. In the Fax Console window, click on Tools and Configure Fax....
  3. Follow the instructions of the Fax Configuration Wizard.
Sending a fax
It is possible to send a fax with your HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario PC by two different ways.
Sending a fax using the Windows XP Fax Console
  1. Open the Fax Console by clicking on Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Fax, and then click Fax Console.
  2. Click on File and Send a Fax....
    When the Send Fax Wizard appears click Next.
  3. In the Recipient Information window, type the name of the recipient and its fax number and click on Next.
  4. In the Preparing the Cover Page window, type a short description of the fax subject in the Subject line box if desired, and the text of the fax in the Note box.
    Click on Next.
  5. In the Schedule dialog box, select the time and the priority for the fax to be sent.
  6. Click Next and Finish.
Sending a fax using the Print dialog box
  1. Open the file that it is going to be faxed, for example, a Works file.
  2. Click on File and then Print.
  3. In the Printer section, select the fax device in the Name drop-down menu and click OK or Print. The Send Fax Wizard appears. Click Next.
     note:
    If there is not any fax option, refer to Installing a fax option and Configuring the fax option sections.
  4. In the Recipient Information window, type the name and fax number for the recipient and click Next.
  5. In the Preparing the Cover Page window, unselect the Select a cover page template with the following information option if sending a cover page is not desired.
    If a cover page is desired fill in the Subject line and/or Note fields.
  6. Click Next.
  7. In the Schedule dialog box, select the time and the priority for the fax to be sent.
  8. Click Next and Finish.
