HP Designjet 200, 300, and 400 Series Printers - Print Cartridge Maintenance

Issue:
Proper cleaning of the HP Designjet carriage contacts, capping station, and the print cartridge contacts.
Solution
The appropriate tools to use are:
  • A lint-free cloth
  • Distilled water (if available, but not necessary).
     caution:
Avoid dry cotton swabs (lint from the cotton may leave debris) or dry cloth (which may scratch the delicate materials, thereby causing damage to the print heads).
     caution:
Do not use alcohol or other abrasive cleaners on any HP Designjet component. HP Designjet inks are water- based products. Using abrasive cleaners may cause damage to electrical connections.
Cleaning the print cartridge contacts
  1. Turn the printer on and access the ink cartridges (press appropriate key on the printer’s front panel).
  2. When ink cartridges are accessible, turn the printer off.
  3. Prepare several lint-free cloths dampened with water. Be sure to wring out the lint-free cloth in order to remove excess water. Never drip water into the printer.
  4. Remove the cartridge from the HP Designjet carriage. Hold it by the cap and turn it upside down so that the nozzle plate of the print head is facing upward. Do not clean the nozzle plate.
  5. Using the damp, lint-free cloth, clean the entire area along the electrical contact pads, especially where it bends down the backside of the print head. Wipe the contact pads very gently toward the cap end of the print head. Following this procedure will ensure that debris/contaminants are not wiped onto or toward the nozzle plate.
 caution:
Do not attempt to clean the print nozzle area of the print heads. Clean only the electrical contacts on the print heads. Cleaning the print nozzle area may cause damage to print heads. Clogged print nozzles can also occur if the nozzle is wiped clean.
Cleaning the carriage contacts
  1. Turn the printer on and access the ink cartridges (press appropriate key on the printer’s front panel).
  2. When ink cartridges are accessible, turn the printer off.
  3. Remove all of the ink cartridges.
  4. Prepare a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with water. Be sure to wring out the lint-free cloth in order to remove excess water. Never drip water into the printer.
  5. Using the damp, lint-free cloth, clean the entire area along the carriage electrical contact pads.
Cleaning the capping station
 warning:
When cleaning the capping station, keep hands away from the printer’s encoder strip (gray strip extending across the Carriage path) as the edges are sharp.
  1. Turn the printer On and access the ink cartridges (press appropriate key on the printer’s front panel).
  2. When ink cartridges are accessible, turn the printer Off.
  3. Prepare a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with water. Be sure to wring out the lint-free cloth in order to remove excess water. Never drip water into the printer.
     caution:
Avoid getting ink on personal property, as the ink may damage carpets, clothing, etc.
  4. At the parking/capping station where the carriage parks when the printer is idle, there are rectangular rubber boots and rubber wipers that could be dirty. Using the damp, lint-free cloth, thoroughly clean all of the rubber boots and wipers.
  5. Allow all cleaned parts to dry.
  6. Reinsert the print cartridges and turn the power on. Once the plotter completes the initialization process, if the cleaning process has been successful, all print cartridges should be recognized. If an individual print cartridge continues not to initialize, please replace the used print cartridge with a new print cartridge.
 note:
When installing a new print cartridge, please ensure that the expiration date, printed on the outside of the cartridge package, is at least six months to a year into the future.
