The HP Printer Installation Disc Does Not Start Automatically in Windows 7

This document is for HP printers that are connected to a computer running Windows 7.
Software installation does not start automatically when you insert the printer's software installation CD in a computer running Windows 7.
Step 1: Open the setup file manually
Use Windows Explorer to open the setup file and start the installation from the software installation CD.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer if it is already connected. If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  2. Insert the software installation CD that shipped with your HP printer into the computer. The installation starts automatically.
     note:
If nothing displays in the right pane of Windows Explorer, or if nothing happens when you double-click Setup.exe, the CD might be damaged or unusable. Skip to the step to order a new installation CD from HP.
  3. On the Windows taskbar, click Start ().
  4. Click Computer, and then double-click the disc drive where the printer software is located.
  5. Double-click Setup.exe to start the installation.

  7. When the Installation Agreements and Settings screen displays, select 'I have reviewed and accept the installation agreements and settings.'
  8. On the Install Complete screen, click Finish.
Step 2: Check the software installation CD for damage
The computer disc drive might not be able to read a dirty or damaged disc. Follow these steps to safely clean the software installation CD.
  1. Remove the software installation CD from the disc drive.
  2. Insert another CD, such as a music CD or a video DVD, to make sure that the disc drive is working correctly.
    • If the music CD or video DVD does not play, there is an issue with the disc drive. Contact the disc drive manufacturer.
    • If the music CD or video DVD does play, inspect the HP installation CD for any damage (such as scratches), and then clean the HP installation CD using a soft cloth dampened in distilled water.
  3. Dry the software installation CD with a lint-free cloth.
  4. Insert the software installation CD into the computer. If the User Account Control window displays at any time during the installation, click Continue.
  5. If the installation does not start automatically, try inserting the CD in another disc drive on the computer, if available.
Step 3: Change the Autoplay settings in Windows
Follow these steps to make sure that the Autoplay check box is selected.
  1. Click the Start (), type autoplay in the Search Programs and Files box, and then press Enter. The Autoplay window opens.
  2. Under Choose what happens when you insert each type of media or device, make sure that the Use AutoPlay for all media and devices check box is selected. Click the check box if the option is not selected.

     note:
If a 'Cannot copy from source disk or drive' or 'Cannot copy specified file' error message opens but other CDs work correctly in the disc drive, the software CD might be damaged or unusable. Skip to the step to order a new installation CD from HP.
  8. On the Windows taskbar, click Start (), type C:\HP Software\setup.exe in the Search Programs and Files box, and then press Enter.
     note:

If you are unable to install the print driver from the software installation CD, download your printer's most recent, full feature driver from the HP website.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
