HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - How to Determine if the CMOS Battery Has Failed

The CMOS RAM settings are wrong or change every time the computer is restarted.
When the setting changes, the following errors can occur:
Error Message
Explanation
CMOS Battery State Low
CMOS RAM is powered by a battery. The battery power is low; replace the battery.
CMOS Checksum Failure
After CMOS RAM values are saved, a checksum value is generated for error checking. The previous value is different from the current value.
Reset BIOS. You must do this every restart until the battery is changed.
CMOS System Options Not Set
The values stored in CMOS RAM are either corrupt or nonexistent.
Reset BIOS. You must do this every restart until the battery is changed.
CMOS Display Type Mismatch
The video type in CMOS RAM does not match the type detected by the BIOS.
Reset BIOS. You must do this every restart until the battery is changed.
CMOS Memory Size Mismatch
The amount of memory on the motherboard is different from the amount in CMOS RAM.
Reset BIOS. You must do this every restart until the battery is changed.
CMOS Time and Date Not Set
Configure time and date in Standard CMOS Setup to set the date and time in CMOS RAM. You must do this every restart until the battery is changed.
If the system settings stored in CMOS change for no apparent reason (for example, the time of day develops an error), the backup battery might no longer have enough power to maintain the settings.
Replace the CMOS battery with a new battery. For general instructions on how to replace the battery, see the HP support document The Computer Clock Loses Time.
