Using the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows to Help Resolve Printer Issues

This document applies to HP printers supported in Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.
 note:
HP Print and Scan Doctor is not available for Mac OS X operating systems. See the How do I resolve common printing and scanning issues if I have a Mac section in this document for more information.
The HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free utility (tool) that helps you review, diagnose, and resolve common printing, scanning, and connectivity issues, including:
  • Hardware issues: Resolve issues such as out of paper, paper jams, carriage stalls, paper feed issues, and view details about your printer such as firmware and software version, serial number, page count, printhead information, and warranty status.
  • Network connection issues: Diagnose and resolve USB or network connection issues and find network settings.
  • Print quality issues: Resolve issues with faded, streaked, or unwanted lines in printouts, initiate automated cartridge and printhead cleanings, or check ink levels.
  • Scanning issues: Resolve scanning issues, check the scan mechanism, drivers, and registry entries.

Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor
Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor to help diagnose common printing, scanning or connectivity issues.
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the HP printer, if it is not already on.
  2. Click Download, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
  3. Open the folder where the computer saved the software file (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
    Once the installation completes, the HP Print and Scan Doctor opens.
  4. Under the Product heading of the Welcome screen, click the name of your printer.

  5. Click Next.
    The HP Print and Scan Doctor checks the connection for your printer.
    • If the connection is successful, the printer displays.

    • If the connection fails, follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.
  6. Click Fix Printing or Fix Scanning, depending on your issue, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
