HP 2000C Series Printer and HP DeskJet 870, 880, 890, 895, and 970 Series Printers - FontSmart Overview

What is HP FontSmart?
HP FontSmart is a new font management tool which was originally introduced with the HP LaserJet 5P and 5MP printers. HP FontSmart allows you to manage all Windows bitmapped, TrueType, and ATM fonts, not just those included with FontSmart. Fonts are easily installed in Windows (allowing you to select a font in your application), uninstalled from Windows (the font is de-activated from Windows but kept on the system for future use), or deleted from your hard disk to reclaim valuable system resources. Typefaces can also be viewed, magnified, and font lists can be printed. A full installation of FontSmart will provide an additional 110 fonts for use by Windows.
 note:
FontSmart - v 2.5 provides 35 PostScript (R) fonts in addition to the 110 fonts. PostScript fonts may be used with PostScript capable printers.
Why use HP FontSmart?
Any fonts installed in Windows use disk space and system resources, and depending on how much system resources are being used, it is possible to experience Windows performance issues. Therefore, it is a good idea to install only those fonts that will actually be used. Even though most Windows systems can handle many fonts without any problems, system performance issues are less likely if fonts that are not needed are uninstalled or deleted.
Because HP FontSmart allows you to install, uninstall, and delete fonts, and because it is able to handle TrueType, Type 1, and bitmap fonts, there is little need to use any other font management applications.
HP FontSmart has another advantage over other font management software. The fonts supplied with HP FontSmart are stored in a highly compressed form on the hard disk, requiring only about 10% of the usual amount of space for fonts. This allows for a large selection of fonts available at all times, without using a lot of disk space.
When HP FontSmart fonts are installed, they are expanded to normal size, so they work just like other TrueType fonts. When they are uninstalled, they are automatically stored in the compressed form. HP FontSmart fonts can be installed and uninstalled as often as needed.
In short, HP FontSmart enables easy font management, and it helps keep the system "clean" and fast-running while providing a large selection of fonts to use.
How does HP FontSmart work?
The HP FontSmart icon opens up to a window. The left-hand side of the window displays fonts that can be installed (uninstalled fonts), and the right-hand side displays all fonts that are currently installed in Windows (installed fonts). To use a particular font, you will need to install that font in Windows. To do this in HP FontSmart, simply select the desired font from the left-hand side of the window and drag it to the right-hand side of the window. To uninstall the font, drag the font from the right side of the window to the left side.
HP FontSmart contains several tools that can help you decide which fonts you want to install. These tools can be accessed from the HP FontSmart menus or the toolbar buttons.
Whenever you select a font from either the left-hand list or the right-hand list, the status bar at the bottom of the window lists the styles that are available for that font (bold, italic, and so forth).
Details as to how HP FontSmart manages fonts
Within HP FontSmart, there is a FONTS menu. Within the menu, there are choices to install a font, uninstall a font, or delete a font. The following table shows what happens to your system when each of these options are chosen.
Install:
Decompresses the font file (as necessary) for use in Windows and moves it to the right side of the HP FontSmart window. A WIN.INI entry referencing the font is made.
Uninstall:
Compresses the font file to the hard drive and moves it to the left side of the HP Font Smart window. The WIN.INI entry referencing the font is removed so the font is no longer accessible through Windows applications. An uninstalled font can be reinstalled at any time.
Delete:
Uninstalls the font (if it is one of the installed fonts), deletes it from the font list (either the left- or right-hand side of the window), removes the font file from the hard disk, and clears disk space. Deleted fonts are completely removed from your system in most cases. The exceptions to this rule are HP FontSmart fonts. If one of these fonts is deleted, the font will be uninstalled, deleted from the font list, and highly compressed so that it takes up little disk space. HP FontSmart fonts are always compressed whether deleted or uninstalled so they can be reinstalled at any time
Font files may reside on any disk: hard disk, flexible disk, network, or CD-ROM. However, for reliability and performance reasons, it is best to place all installed fonts on a hard disk. Other disk types may be too slow or less reliable.
Because of this, HP FontSmart always defaults to copy font files onto the hard disk during installation. The standard or "default" location for installed fonts is the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
System performance while installing HP FontSmart fonts
Whenever HP FontSmart is run, it searches the entire system drive (by default) for all installable fonts and typefaces to build the font lists. The time this process takes is dependent on the number of font files available on the drive searched, as well as overall system performance.
The speed with which fonts are installed in Windows using HP FontSmart depends on the size and complexity of the fonts, the number of fonts being installed, the number of fonts already installed, and the number of applications running when the fonts are installed. Installation will be fastest if you close all other applications simply because HP FontSmart "calls" each application that is open to inform it that new fonts have been installed.
HP FontSmart can, of course, be run while other applications are open. In most cases, you will not experience problems with performance. When a font is installed into Windows, an entry is made in the WIN.INI file. That entry tells Windows what the font name is and where to find the font file on a disk.
Removing HP FontSmart
To remove HP FontSmart from your system, follow the procedure given below. HP FontSmart may be reinstalled at any time by using the Printing System installation diskettes with which HP FontSmart was originally installed.
To remove HP FontSmart software from your system:
  1. Delete the HPFONTS directory and all of the HP FontSmart files in that directory.
     note:
If any font files have been installed in this directory, do not delete them. Font files have the extension .TTF. If you want to delete these fonts, you should use the HP FontSmart software to do this before you uninstall HP FontSmart.
  2. Delete the HP FontSmart icon from the Windows desktop.
  3. Delete the following files from the WINDOWS directory:
    • FONTSMART.INI
    • HPBMP.$CH
    • HPFNT.$CH
    • PRNTNAME.INI
