Fatal Error 'Error 1331. Cannot find <FILE NAME> in cabinet file.' (MSI Error 1331) Displays During Software Installation in Windows XP

Issue
While you install the HP software, the following fatal error message displays on the computer: 'Error 1331. Cannot find <FILE NAME> in cabinet file.'
Solution
Follow these steps to perform a level-three uninstall, register the Windows Installer Service, and then reinstall the HP software. An uninstall and reinstall of the software deletes and overwrites any of the files that might cause the error and resets the Windows Installer. HP recommends that you download the latest software from the HP website to remove any files that might be causing this error.
Step one: Perform a level-three uninstall
Using the downloaded software from the HP website, you can perform a level-three uninstall. A level-three uninstall is more comprehensive than the add-remove programs uninstall.
Step two: Register the Windows Installer
Follow these steps to reset the registry settings and options for Windows Installer.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msiexec / unreg, and then click OK.
  3. Click Start, and then click Run.
  4. In the Open box, type msiexec / regserver, and then click OK.
Step three: Reinstall the HP Software
Follow these steps to reinstall the HP software. By reinstalling the software, you replace everything needed to run the program. This deletes corrupt or missing files.
If you have already downloaded the software, you do not have to download it again. Otherwise, follow these instructions to download and install the software.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer (if you already connected it). If the printer is connected to your network, leave it connected.
  3. Use one of the available methods to identify your printer model.
The Software & Drivers page displays when the printer model is identified.

  4. Select your operating system, and then click Submit.
A list of drivers and other downloads displays.
  5. Under Driver - Product Installation Software, click Download.
  6. If an HP Download and Install Assistant window displays, select Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended) or Download only, and then click Next.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to save the driver to your computer.
  8. If you used the Download only method, open or run the driver file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
