Fatal Error 'Error 1933. Windows Installer Services Cannot Update One or More Protected Windows Files' (MSI Error 1933) Displays During Software Installation in Windows XP

Issue
While you install the HP software, the following fatal error message displays on the computer: 'Error 1933. Windows Installer Services Cannot Update One or More Protected Windows Files.'
Solution one: Check administrator privileges and remove and reinstall the software
Follow these steps to check the privileges on your computer, and then remove and reinstall the software.
Step one: Check administrator privileges
You must have administrator privileges on your computer so that you do not attempt to install the software on a restricted users account. If you do not have the correct privileges on your computer, the new software files will not replace the old software files and Fatal Error 1933 continues.
  1. Open the Run dialog box.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type lusrmgr.msc, and then press Enter. The Local Users and Groups window opens.
  4. Click Groups on the left pane.
  5. Double-click Administrators on the right pane to see all the users with administrative privileges.
  • If you do have Administrator privileges, continue to the next step in this document.
  • If you do not have Administrator privileges, contact your system administrator.
Step two: Remove the software
  1. Open the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. The Control Panel window opens.
  3. Open the list of installed programs and remove the software.
  4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. In the list of installed programs, click the HP product, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall.
     caution:
    If asked to remove shared files, click No. Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
Step three: Reinstall the software
You can use the software CD that shipped with your product to install, but for the most current software HP recommends downloading and installing the software from the HP Web site.
If you have already downloaded the software, you do not have to download it again. Otherwise, follow these instructions to download and install the software.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page: Get Software and Drivers
  4. Check the instructions on the page, and then click the Plus sign (+) next to the correct heading for additional instructions:
    • If prompted to enter your product in the window.
      1. Type your product number in the window.
      2. Click Next. If necessary click your model in a list of similar products.
      3. Click Software and Driver Downloads.
      4. Click the drop-down arrow (), and then click your operating system.
      5. Continue to the next step.
    • If prompted to select your operating system.
      1. Click the drop-down arrow (), and then click your operating system.
      2. Click Next.
      3. Continue to the next step.
  5. Click the Plus sign () next to Driver, and then click the driver that you want to download.
  6. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions () for complete download instructions.
  7. Click Download. This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  8. Click Save, and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  9. Click Save. The software downloads to your computer.
    Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Copy and rename the files, and then reinstall the HP software
Follow these steps to manage the downloaded files, and then reinstall the HP software.
Step one: Find the files
Use one of the following methods to find the file. Use the method that corresponds to how you installed the software when the error occurred.
Step two: Remove, rename, and save the files
  1. Find the following four files in the table, right-click them, and select Extract.
     note:
    Leave the Windows Explorer window open after extracting the files.
  2. After you extract the files, rename the files according to the Rename column in the following table.

  3. Save the files to the Windows Desktop.
  4. Close the software installation and restart it.
Step three: Copy the files
  1. Select all four of the files by clicking them one at a time while holding down the CTRL key on the keyboard.
  2. Right-click one of the files, and then click Copy.
  3. Return to the Windows Explorer window and find and click the Windows (or WinNT) folder to open it.
  4. Click Edit, and then click Paste. A window opens asking if you want to overwrite the files. Click Yes or OK.
  5. Go to the next step to try to install the software again.
