HP Printers - Scan from the Computer with HP Solution Center (Windows)

This document is for HP multifunction printers released in 2009 or earlier with HP Solution Center software installed on a Windows computer.
The full feature HP driver and software package for your printer includes HP Solution Center software. Change scan quality and color settings, attach scans to email messages, set a destination folder to save scans to, and more.
With HP Solution Center installed, you can start scan jobs from the printer control panel. If the software is not installed, the computer cannot process scanned items and the scan button or icon on the printer is disabled.

Step 1: Set up scan settings and preferences
Before starting a scan, use HP Solution Center to set up scan options such as shortcuts that display on the control panel and default scan preview preferences.
  1. Search Windows for your printer model name, then click the printer name in the list of results.
    HP Solution Center opens.
     note:
If HP Solution center does not open, see the Frequently asked questions in this document for steps to install the software.
  2. Click the Settings icon at the bottom of the window, then click Scan Settings.
  3. Select one of the options to set up default scan job settings.
    • Prompt for settings at the time of scan: Choose a specific Scan Picture or Scan Document scan shortcut, then select the check box to view shortcuts and settings options each time you scan with HP Solution Center (recommended).
    • Show preview scan: Select this option to review the scan quality and make additional edits before the scan is saved (recommended).
    • Prompt for settings when scanning from the control panel: Get a prompt for any changes you want to make to the scan settings before completing the scan job (recommended).
    • Scan to...Setup: Select an available scan shortcut, click Add, then click Update the device to add the shortcut to the printer control panel.
    • Scan preferences: Select default settings for scan shortcuts such as automatic color and quality adjustments, orientation preferences, and prompts to add additional pages.
    • Create a new custom scan shortcut: Review the default settings for a selected scan shortcut, change any basic settings as desired, then click Save Shortcut to name and save the shortcut.
Continue to the next step.
Step 2: Scan a document or photo
Use HP Solution Center to start scan jobs from the computer and change size, color, and quality settings.
  1. Place the document or photo printed side down on the scanner glass, then close the scanner lid.
If your printer has an automatic document feeder (ADF), you can use it to scan multiple page documents at one time. Do not load photos in the ADF to prevent damage to the photos and the printer.
  2. Return to the HP Solution Center home screen, then click Scan Document or Scan Picture.
The HP Scan Shortcuts window opens.
  3. Click one of the shortcuts, then change any basic settings in the drop-down menus on the right side of the window.
  4. Click Advanced Picture Settings or Advanced Document Settings to change settings such as quality, color, and to set multiple items to save in a single file.
     note:
HP Solution Center versions and options vary depending on your printer. For specific instructions on the available settings, click Help on the settings screen.
  5. Click Save to file Save Options to change the folder where scans are saved, scan naming options, and what happens after you save the scan file.
  6. Click Scan.
The printer scans the item and a scan preview window opens on the computer.
  7. Click the scanned item to make any additional changes, then click Finish to save the scanned file.
