HP Designjet 400 Series Printers - Front Panel Overview

Introduction

The HP Designjet 400 series printers have a unique front panel layout. This document will explain the panel and its uses. The panel features the following:
  • Setup, Form Feed, Replot, and Cancel keys
  • A group of status lights
  • A group of error lights
  • Three groups of lights and keys for print quality, media type, and media source

Action keys

Key
Function
SETUP
Prints the current printer configuration (a setup sheet).
FORM FEED
Advances the paper and can also force a plot terminator.
REPLOT
Reprints the last file.
CANCEL
Ends the job currently being processed.
PRINT QUALITY
Changes the print quality from Normal (the default) to either Fast or Best.
MEDIA TYPE
Configures the printer for different classes of media.
MEDIA SOURCE
Indicates whether roll or sheet media will be loaded.

Status lights

The lights on the control panel provide day-to-day communication with the printer. They indicate the printer’s current status and the nature of any error. To understand the meaning of each combination of lights, refer to the following table.

PAPER on
The current media selection is PAPER.
FILM on
The current media selection is FILM.
GLOSSY on
The current media selection is GLOSSY.
COATED on
The current media selection is COATED.
FAST on
The current Print Quality selection is FAST.
BEST on
The current Print Quality selection is BEST.
NORMAL on
The current Print Quality selection is NORMAL.
READY on
The printer is ready to plot. Send the plot from the computer or, for a special internal plot, press the appropriate key combination.
SHEET on
The printer is currently set for sheet media, rather than roll media.
ROLL on
The printer is currently set for roll media, rather than sheet media.

DATA flashing
The current plot is too large for the printer’s memory. Look on the screen for any error message. The Microsoft (R) Windows driver supplied with the printer allows you to select a different printing mode and send the file again. In the case of the Windows 95 driver shipped with the printer, the relevant field is called Process document in the Options dialog box. If changing the print mode is not successful, more memory may be needed to print this plot.
CARTRIDGE flashing
One of the color or black print cartridges is faulty, misplaced, or missing.
-Or-
The print cartridge loaded is the wrong kind for this printer.
LOAD MEDIA on
The printer is ready, but needs media.
LOAD MEDIA flashing
The printer has a file in memory, which it is waiting to plot, but no media is loaded. Load media.
ALIGN MEDIA flashing
Realign the media, even if it seems perfectly aligned. Lower the lever, realign the media, and raise the lever.
MEDIA flashing
The sheet loaded is misaligned.
-Or-
It is an invalid size.
-Or-
The media lever is lowered. Raise the lever.
-Or-
The cover is open when the printer is initializing. Lower the cover.
DATA flashing
There is a problem with the serial interface. The printer’s settings for baud rate and parity must be the same as those of the computer sending the data.
READY off
The printer is not ready to plot. Check the state of the other lights and look up the pattern in this table.
READY flashing
The printer is busy with a task or is receiving a file. Wait.

When ready to print, load media.

Reseat or replace the cartridge.
Check to make sure the part numbers are correct for this printer.

The current print is too large for the printer’s memory.

There is a problem with the serial interface.
Check the computer screen for any error message. Some drivers allow you to choose a different printing mode and try to send the file again. Otherwise, more memory may be need to be installed to use this function.
The printer’s settings for baud rate and parity must be the same as those of the computer sending the data.
MEDIA
ON and flashing
The sheet loaded is misaligned.

The sheet is an invalid size.

The media lever is lowered.

The cover is open when the printer is initializing.
Realign it again.
Be sure to use supported media sizes
Raise the media lever.
Lower the cover.

Using a driver with the front panel

  • The driver overrides the front panel print quality setting.
  • The media type set from the front panel overrides the driver settings.
  • The media source can be set only from the front panel.
