HP introduced a hybrid RGB+IR webcam sensor to commercial notebooks in 2019.
HP introduced a hybrid RGB+IR webcam sensor to commercial notebooks in 2019. The new single sensor enables features that improves product ID and user experience.
With the two sensors merged into one, the camera may experience some limitations when observed under certain lighting conditions. HP Notebooks equipped with the hybrid webcam sensor may display a purple tint, due to the light source that is overloading the camera’s ability to color correct.
Hybrid Webcam Sensor
Certain lighting conditions that produce a significant amount of infrared light, such as halogen or incandescent lightbulbs, can impact the image being captured through the camera’s lens.
The intense infrared lighting interferes with the hybrid webcam’s sensors’ ability to accurately compensate what is entering the lens, resulting in the discoloration.
Accurate Compensation
Under Compensation
The purple tinting is an industry-wide limitation of the hybrid webcam sensor and certain measures can be taken to improve the quality of the webcam image.

Certain light sources may impact the image quality the webcam produces. If discoloration in the webcam image occurs, perform the following:
Adjust the light source.
Light sources that contain a high amount of infrared light may impact the Hybrid Webcam Sensor. This includes the standard incandescent lightbulbs, halogen lightbulbs, and direct sunlight.
HP recommends using a light source that does not contain high amounts of infrared light. This includes LED or florescent lightbulbs.
Adjust the light intensity.
Light intensity is based on the distance from the light source to the image being captured through the sensor. Moving a light source that is directly shining on a subject (i.e., a desk lamp) a few feet further away from the sensor may have a significant impact on the image quality.
