HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - The Computer Restarts Unexpectedly (Windows XP)

This document pertains to HP and Compaq computers with Windows XP.
If Windows XP suddenly starts without warning, or restarts when you try to shut it down, it might be because your operating system is set to automatically restart when certain system errors occur. You can change this setting in Windows. Use the following information to change the Automatically Restart option.
 note:
In addition to the steps in this article, updating video card drivers can resolve many of the problems that cause the computer to restart.
Disable the Automatically Restart option
Resolve this issue by turning off the Automatically Restart option:
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings.
  4. Under System Failure, remove the checkmark next to Automatically Restart.
  5. Click OK to close the Startup and Recovery window, and then click OK to close the System Properties window.
  6. Restart the computer.
After changing this setting, the computer no longer restarts automatically when a problem occurs. Instead, a blue screen displays with detailed information about the error message. You can now search for a resolution using the text from the error.
Heat-related damage on the microprocessor, the video processor, or memory DIMMs can cause blue screen errors and system lock ups. Blocked ventilation or dust build up on internal parts can cause heat-related damage. To help reduce blue screen errors and system lock ups, provide proper ventilation for the computer, use it in a clean environment, and clean it regularly. For more help and information, see Reducing Heat Inside the PC.
