HP Deskjet 350 Printer - Installing a Full Featured Printer Driver in Microsoft(R) Windows XP

Introduction
The printer software provided on the HP Deskjet 350C Starter CD is not WHQL certified for use with Microsoft® Windows XP, but it has been found to work properly when installed. Attempting to install the printer software onto a computer running Windows XP may generate the following error:
“DRIVER INSTALLATION WARNING: The driver you are about to install is not designed for XP. Running this driver may create stability problems and it is recommended that you obtain a later version of this driver from the manufacturer.”
The only printer driver officially supported for use with Windows XP is the HP Deskjet 350 printer driver that is included with the operating system. It is the only HP Deskjet 350 printer driver that is WHQL certified for use with Windows XP.
Workaround
The printer driver included on the Starter CD, or the Windows 2000 printer driver downloaded from the Web can be installed in Windows XP. The following error message will appear:
DRIVER INSTALLATION WARNING: The driver you are about to install is not designed for XP. Running this driver may create stability problems and it is recommended that you obtain a later version of this driver from the manufacturer.
This warning occurs because the driver is not WHQL certified for Windows XP. The driver will install and function normally. The differences between installing the printer from the Starter CD using SETUP.EXE or installing the driver from the Internet using the Add Printer are detailed below:

    2. Repeat the previous step until all the programs appearing on the taskbar are closed.

Installing the driver with the Add Printer Wizard (Internet download)
Follow the instruction below to install the printer driver from the Internet.
  1. Click here to go to the Downloads and Drivers Web page for the HP Deskjet 350 series printer or go to http://www.hp.com/go/dj350 and select the Drivers option.
  2. Select the Windows 2000 operating system from the links at the top of the page or scroll to the driver listing for Windows 2000.
  3. Click a link to download either the full or lite version of the driver.
     note:
The full driver may also be downloaded as multiple files. All the parts must be downloaded before the driver can be installed. The file should be downloaded in multiple parts if you have a slow Internet connection, your connection tends to disconnect or error during long downloads, or you wish to copy the downloaded files to floppy diskettes.
  4. If prompted, select the option to save the file to disk and click OK.
  5. If needed, write down the filename and the name of the folder where the file will be saved. Click OK to begin downloading the driver file.
  6. Close any unnecessary programs that are running on the computer using the steps below.
    1. Right-click any program appearing on the taskbar next to the Start button and select Close.
    2. Repeat the previous step until all the programs appearing on the taskbar are closed.
  7. Right-click My Computer and select Explore.
  8. Locate the folder containing the downloaded driver and double-click the file.
  9. A prompt will appear showing the default path where the files will be extracted. To use a path other than the default, type the path here. Select OK to continue the installation. If the single file version of the full driver was downloaded, the SETUP.EXE program will automatically run after the files have finished extracting. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete the installation. If the lite version of the driver was downloaded, continue to the next step after the files have been extracted.
  10. Select Start, and then Printers and Faxes.
  11. Click Add a Printer, and then select Next.
  12. Select Local printer attached to this computer, and then select Next.
  13. Select LPT1, and select Next.
  14. When asked for a manufacturer and printer, select Have Disk. You do not need to select a manufacturer.
  15. Select Browse and locate the driver's HP350.INF file. Highlight the file and select OPEN.
  16. Select OK when the Install From Disk window appears, select the HP Deskjet 350 printer and select Next.
  17. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation of the printer driver. The following error may occur:
“DRIVER INSTALLATION WARNING: The driver you are about to install is not designed for XP. Running this driver may create stability problems and it is recommended that you obtain a later version of this driver from the manufacturer.”
When asked if you would like to proceed, select OK. The printer driver will install and function normally.
